Make the web go brrr

Wow, no way! I just installed the @atpassport.net Firefox extension and managed to log into a website using FedCM in Firefox using my own PDS. This is insane, I had no idea this was possible at all, and gives a whole opportunity for us to implement FedCM in Firefox (and maybe even Safari?).

I don't have a single tattoo, and likely never will, but getting a navier-stokes counter example would be pretty high on my list if it holds peer reviewing. I can't believe we got computers to come up with this, hard to believe I'm seeing this.

The one that I like most is what we've been calling the "save to autofill UX", which looks like this. This would show up when you are logging in to the IdP, say, bluesky.app. It would register the website as an IdP (with the permission of the user) so that it can be automatically discovered later.

The "worse case scenario" is when a user is (a) not logged in to any of the "listed idps" and (b) has never "registered" any idp. In which case, they get the following, which I, personally, think is reasonable.

The mental model I have of this UX is a "search box": you get 0-state suggestions with "listed IdPs" but as you type the browser starts discoverying new IdPs that conform to a search constrain specified by the relying party. Here, the user is offered to add an account based on what they typed:

By clicking on "Add another account" in the first prompt. When that happens, the browsers open an account selector, that allows you to add more accounts for "listed IdPs" but also to type your own (the same way you type an email address in an input box).

First, the happy case scenario, logging in to a website with your atproto account, say lealeft.pub. This is a good end state prompt: one that shows every atproto account you are logged in to (most users would only have one) and allows the user to select one.

@thisismissem.social @divy.zone and I recently went through an exploration of how the browser can help you login to websites with atproto accounts. We recently presented to the FedID CG and here is a sneak peek in case you couldn't join! This is early but we'd love your input before we go too far!

Things are moving so fast with EVP that if you flip this flag: chrome://flags/#enable-experimental-web-platform-features You get a brand new UX formulation with indicators in the input field!

I spent some time this morning playing with their endpoints ... I genuinely believe this is the first time that a google account and facebook account interoperate in an unified account chooser that websites can use to login to their websites.

Just tried EVP in chrome stable for the first time! If you are logged in to your gmail account: 1) Go to chrome://settings/help and see if you got chrome 150+ 2) Go to code.sgo.to/2024/10/25/v... and select in autofill your gmail address 3) Click sign-in 4) There is no step 4

Just so that people don't say that I'm not working here is a picture of me pondering about zero knowledge proofs in Manarolo ...

Surf 's onboarding screen had me at the "minimize Elon musk setting" :) I actually like Elon, but I appreciate the boldness :) Worth my free advertisement :)

I'm bothered by this screen here, where I type my PDS's password, and that form submission goes into bsky.app's HTTP server. How that's used is beyond my (and your) control.

Obviously, this is useful across all identity providers, not just google.com. Here is what it looks like with my own personal PDS signing-in to webmention.io with Indie Auth. I'm hoping this will lead to a good UX for bluesky too.

I think this also connects well with a larger vision for the social web for actions beyond logging in here: github.com/w3c-fedid/id...

It makes a distinction between signing-up and signing-in, with a louder modal dialog for the latter and a quieter streamlined version for returning users.

I'm putting together a chrome://flag in canaries that enables the FedCM's Ambient UX in the URL bar. I've been using it for a week or so: it is beautiful and I think it will have arrive at an economic equilibrium. Here is the before / after, how to enable it and why we are working on it:

Wow, a lot of you are online and contributing :) Here is what this looks like for me :) PS I'm deliberately trying to avoid showing everybody in the room / doc to give readers a sense of cozyness :) But, it seems unfair that only I get the sense of how much this is blowing up :) *thinking*

I got a crunch labs subscription for the kids and can no longer tell if this will be for them or for me :) What a beautifully designed kit, we are on our second one and I would highly recommend it so far!
