If I'm president and don't much care about norms, and you make a law that gives a hard time limit to federal permitting reviews and defaults them to "approved" when time expires, what happens if I fire lots of agency staffers who handle reviews, or just defund the relevant agency branches?

One of the highlights of NYC Climate Week was getting a ride through the city on Saul Griffith's new Lightfoot scooter. It's incredibly cool -- way more solid & stylish in person than I expected. I swear I took pictures but I can't find any of them so you'll have to trust me.

The Lightfoot scooter comes with two large solar panels so it doesn't have to plug in.

Talked about heat pumps today with a bunch of awesome home energy auditors/consultants who help Indiana rural electric co-op members save money on bills. Here's my TL;DR slide on household HVAC economics.
Summary of household HVAC economics

Heat pumps generally beat heating oil, electric resistance, and propane.

Heat pumps generally don’t beat natural gas *for heating only.*

But heat pumps generally do beat natural gas (and all other fuels) when
the household *also needs a new AC.*

⇒ Heat pumps generally win in new construction.
⇒ Heat pumps are coming, whether you want them or not.

It really is striking how many authoritarian states have ended up in this exact same place, where the leader seizes control of scientific inquiry. Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union, Aryan Physics in the Third Reich, Great Leap Forward (also related to Lysenko) in China.

Carbon offsets convey the incorrect belief that nature-based or machine-based carbon sinks can substitute for rapid direct emissions reductions. Carbon removal must be ADDITIONAL, it is not a substitute for emissions reductions.

The problem is that there's no way to condemn the voyeurism without driving even more attention to it. Every tool we have to enforce the norm violates the norm more. Even this will probably cause few people to google "kissing lawyers" to figure out what we're talking about.

I’m not a climate minimizer or denier. Far from it. But I think it is necessary to point out that abrupt increases in temperature in valleys below high mountains is not unheard of and taking this event as a climate change indicator, while reasonable for a monexpert to consider, is far from clear.
