It is official: Cedar Rapids had a record high low of 86 yesterday, October 12, and tied the record high of 88. That is now 35 record highs versus 3 record lows just since January 1, 2024. This is another manifestation of the accelerating climate crisis.

Cedar Rapids hit 88 today, tying the record high for today set in 1995. The record high low for today is 64. I’m waiting for the official report on that but when I looked this morning it appeared we might break that record, too. Remember when we hit 89 on March 21? It’s been a long, hot year.

As a reminder, since January 1, 2024, in Cedar Rapids, we have had 26 months with above average temperatures - including 7 that were more than 5 degrees above average - versus 7 months below average. None of those were 5 degrees below average. We have had 33 record highs versus 3 record lows.

Through yesterday, October 10, we are 6.9 degrees above average for the month in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and have had eight days in a row with above average temperatures. I know the forecast says we will cool off by Tuesday or Wednesday, but it’s really just getting back down around average.

A friend just sent me the gas prices in Clarence, Iowa: $4.25 for E-10 $6.19 for diesel People keep saying they are going to go down, but when? Trump has drained the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to less than 285 million barrels. He has created a huge mess by his undeclared war against Iran.

The average price of gasoline in Iowa in October 2024 was $2.90 per gallon. Today it was $4.34 in northeast Cedar Rapids. What Trump is doing is not working. Maybe he should ask Joe Biden for suggestions.

Gas is around $4 per gallon in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, today. Saw Kwik Star in northeast Cedar Rapids jumped today to $4.34 per gallon (E-10) unleaded (87 octane). Other stations in the area were at $3.93 (Sinclair), $3.94 (Casey), $4.14 (at I-380 and Blairs Ferry), and $4.34 (Shell on 1st Ave NE).

We had another record high low in Cedar Rapids on September 4 - the 33rd record high here compared to 3 record lows since Jan. 1, 2024. In addition, September 2026 was also extraordinarily wet here, with 11.12 inches of rain for the month, more than three times the average rainfall of 3.4 inches.

The proposed Morgan Valley plant would also add climate pollution equivalent to more than 300,000 additional cars. Given the accelerating climate crisis, that is unacceptable. Cedar Rapids should stop it. Linn County should stop it. Iowa should stop it. Speak up. No massive fossil gas plant.

The proposed Morgan Valley fossil gas plant would also pollute the homes near the plant and throughout Fairfax, Cedar Rapids and Linn County. Alliant says they are not reducing pollution at another plant as part of this project. This would just add pollution to our already unhealthy air.

The land there has long been zoned agricultural. Changing the zoning to industrial would be fundamentally unfair to residents who live near there based on the ag zoning and character of the area. It’s even worse than eminent domain in that there is no constitutional just compensation requirement.

As recently as June 30, gas had jumped up to $3.59 per gallon in Cedar Rapids. People blamed the July 4 holiday. Today, it went up to $4.44 per gallon. Meanwhile, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has been drained from 415 million barrels in February to now less than 285 million barrels. (1/2)

When I went to church this morning gas in northeast Cedar Rapids was $3.75 per gallon. Coming home it was $4.19 (see photo). Instead of coming down after Labor Day, it shot up. This isn’t going well. I have heard nothing from the White House on what we should do to address it.
