We were spared last night, but out in Lincoln, Nebraska, they had the largest one-day rain they have ever had.

September 2026 finished 5.1 degrees above average for the month in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Since January 1, 2024: 26 months have been above average, compared to 7 months below average. 7 months have been more than 5 degrees above average, while none have been more than 5 degrees below average.

I have questions about the proposed steel mill in Iowa: 1. How will they get the materials to Iowa and how will they ship them out? 2. Will they be using “clean steel” processes? 3. How much energy will they use and from what source? Will it increase energy costs for other local residents?

This shows how stupid Republicans are in their pursuit of those who were holding Trump accountable. I also don’t understand why Senator Klobuchar had to correct Senator Schmitt. Why didn’t the chair of the committee, Senator Grassley, who is from Iowa, correct him?!?!?

I joined neighbors and other concerned citizens yesterday outside Cedar Rapids City Hall to express opposition to the massive 720 megawatt fossil gas plant proposed by Alliant Energy for western Linn County along Highway 30 (the “Morgan Valley” proposal).

Trump is hurting beef sales because consumers don’t want “beef” from other countries. Importing foreign beef (especially without country of origin labels) is a double whammy for American cattle producers.

If your response to today’s high gas and diesel prices is that they were high under Biden in 2022 . . . You are actually pointing out what a good job Biden did bringing gas prices down - after Russia attacked Ukraine - and what a bad job Trump has done, first by attacking Iran, and since.

As recently as June 30, gas had jumped up to $3.59 per gallon in Cedar Rapids. People blamed the July 4 holiday. Today, it went up to $4.44 per gallon. Meanwhile, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has been drained from 415 million barrels in February to now less than 285 million barrels. (1/2)

For the first half of September, Cedar Rapids Iowa had 13 days above average versus 2 days below average. We also ended up with 18 straight days above average from August 26 to September 12. Does anyone know the last time Cedar Rapids had 18 days in a row bslow average?

Great to grab dinner tonight at the Starlite in Cedar Rapids with Taylor Wettach. He’s running for state auditor to replace Rob Sand. He’s 36 years old, from Muscatine, and ready to serve as Iowa’s independent watchdog to protect taxpayers in the auditor’s office. Voting starts October 14.

When I went to church this morning gas in northeast Cedar Rapids was $3.75 per gallon. Coming home it was $4.19 (see photo). Instead of coming down after Labor Day, it shot up. This isn’t going well. I have heard nothing from the White House on what we should do to address it.

Record high gas prices (and diesel) for Labor Day. I have seen no plan or action from Trump or Republicans to bring prices back down (except Indiana suspending the gas tax which is not fiscally sustainable and is ultimately not effective). (1/2)

I just looked at the forecast for Cedar Rapids for Sept. 5 to 19. Not as hot as the first four days of September, but every day in the forecast above the average for today (high 78, low 56). The first four days have all been more than 14 degrees above average. Extraordinary heat for September.

So it is official: we had another record high low in Cedar Rapids yesterday (September 4): a low temperature of 72, breaking the record of 71 set in 2018. That means we have now had 33 record highs in Cedar Rapids since January 1, 2024, compared to 3 record lows. #iaweather #actonclimate

Should we celebrate? I saw gas *down* to $3.82 per gallon today in Cedar Rapids. We have solutions, like fuel efficiency, electric vehicles, and walkable and bikeable communities, that can free us from our dependence on fossil fuels. Let’s do them, hopefully with the support of our government.

According to the Department of Energy, gas prices in the Midwest in 2022 averaged $3.68 per gallon before Labor Day. My recollection is they were lower than that in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Do you think they will be lower or higher in the next two weeks before Labor Day 2026?

The national debt, now over $40 trillion, works out to $115,000 per American. Over 25% of that has been added under Trump in just 5+ years. Congress needs to stop Trump before he hurts anyone else or does any more damage to our country or our economy.

Not the greatest picture, but gas at $4.19 per gallon today in northeast Cedar Rapids. We urgently need more conservation, more clean cars (fuel efficient and electric), and more walkable and bikeable communities. They save money and reduce demand to reduce the price of gasoline.

Well, gas had been down a little - I saw $3.57 per gallon earlier this week - but has gone back up to $3.89 per gallon in northeast Cedar Rapids. I filled up with 3.5 gallons at $3.85 per gallon in Marion. Too much but wanted to fill up for the end of the month. That’s 13.8 gallons for July.
