There is no "plausible legal basis" for the US military operation that led to the capture of Nicolas Maduro, Geoffrey Corn, a former adviser to the US armed forces, told Sky News.

"The administration has been building the architecture for a legal argument with this... narco terror theory of self-defence, which has been almost universally condemned as invalid by international law scholars," the Texas Tech University academic said.

He believes the consequences of today's strikes could be "very significant".

"I think all countries should be worried," Corn said.

He added:

"We've never shredded the envelope like we're seeing now... smaller countries in the region that are perceived by the Trump administration as creating challenges to our foreign policy or domestic agenda have legitimate reason to be concerned."
