On a chilly January day, CrossCountry DMU 170103 passes the cleared ex-Midland lower quadrant semaphore at Ketton working 1N55 Cambridge to Birmingham New Street. This signal was finally replaced in March 2026.

TransPennine DMUs 185134 and 185117 pass the modernist signal box at Barton Hill as they work 1P28 Scarborough to Manchester Victoria. As part of a modernisation programme, the wheel-worked crossing barriers are to be replaced with automatic ones and the box will also assume control of the level crossing at Howsham.

They have actually replaced one of the semaphores at Dunragit (with another semaphore), so there is apparently a point at which some rust is too much rust; this is - amazingly - not it.

Looking at my other photos, many no longer have their tops, whether a simple cap or a proper finial, so I don’t think the rust has much to do with it.
