TransPennine DMUs 185134 and 185117 pass the modernist signal box at Barton Hill as they work 1P28 Scarborough to Manchester Victoria. As part of a modernisation programme, the wheel-worked crossing barriers are to be replaced with automatic ones and the box will also assume control of the level crossing at Howsham.

Oh really!? They were about to start work when I visited, but I didn’t realise the work included resignalling. Impeccable timing on my part then.

Yes, absolutely. And at Tondu, it’s probably now completely invisible, but there was actually a line off to the right of your photo, up to Blaengarw. In 2019, the only evidence it existed were a few semaphore arms amidst the trees.
