I had grown up with video games, my mom used to play the original NES, and there was always something with it. And despite Spyro the Dragon being the first game I got, the game that settled my gaming identity was Diablo II.

my modest disagreement is that i think it is important to signal virtue even if, privately, you are a piece of shit. performing decency is an important part of maintaining the norm that decency is part of a well ordered society.

Rep. Dick Centrist (D) has died at 120. He leaves behind an impeccable record of voting for every war since Korea. He will be replaced by Patty Hitler (R,) a genetic clone of Adolph Hitler.

Wow: after 15 years, YouTube has taken down the original 'Rick Roll' video due to a "licensing issue," likely due to the acquisition of Astley's record lable. The metadata remains, but if you click through it goes to 'video not found': www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4...

More free time? Yes. More peace of mind? Oh my, no. Estimates for violent mortality among pre-agricultural hunter-gathers, as Azar Gat notes in War in Human Civilization, were *extremely* high, in the range of 15-25% (higher for males, lower for females). 1/

Alright, @sarahebond.bsky.social in her cruelty has made me aware of this remarkably incompetent talk Malcolm Gladwell gave and so I am going to inflict it on all of you by going through all of the mistakes he makes here in the hope that none of you will ever take him seriously again. 1/

Good thread here. Very confusing why, after many years of people underestimating the power of slings, people now insist that they were the equivalent of an ancient sniper rifle. I have a few things to add because there's a lot of weird Hebrew words in 2 Samuel 17 whose meaning is not very clear.

Spring. I like spring. Soon it will be summer, and I can't wait. Is strange though, just a handful of years ago I was an autumn person who really disliked summer, now I'm looking forward to it do much...

A pine grove, the ground covered in dry leaves from last year, and thousands of wood anemones. The few non-pine trees and bushes are starting to break out into leaf. The sky glimpsed through gaps in the trees is overcast white.

Withholding Luigi's manifesto on grounds that it might inspire copycats was always disingenuous because prosecutors are going to introduce it as evidence anyway. The truth is media didn't want to anger their law enforcement sources

Good moderation is key to a healthy online community. If there isn't any, it is just a race to the bottom about who can be the first to be worst. In places like this the social contract needs a bit of enforcement. Unlike IRL you can't just walk away.

The autumn can be quite pretty after all. I'll miss summer though.

A photo of a river in a forest during a sunny autumn day. Four pines close to the camera. Some buildings are visible along the near shore of the river. A railway bridge crosses the river. Nothing on top of it.
The skies are blue, with cloud coverage over by the far horizon
