For those like us downwind of the wildfires and who would like a room air filter: the Corsi-Rosenthal Box is quite cheap, all the parts are available at any hardware store, and it can be assembled with duct tape in a few minutes. And then you feel like Matt Damon on Mars.

My Apple phone “processed” yesterday’s clearly yellow Boston sky to bluish-gray. Any idea how to turn that processing off so the picture shows what the eyes see? Shooting in RAW didn’t work, neither did the various filters—they affect the whole photo. And yes, putting out the fires would work best
iPhone pic showing a gray-blue sky on a day when the eyes revealed a very yellow sky. Compare to the news pic taken in Boston which reveals the true color.News pic of the yellow Boston sky 7/15/26 taken the same day as the other pic in this post. This pic shows true color. The other (iPhone) pic does not.

We all know Mark Hamill as the screen Jedi, but he also keeps cropping up IRL; today it’s in Sally Hayden’s new book This Is Also A Love Story. See the Alt Text for the story from pp18-19. @markhamillofficial.bsky.social And may the (other) 4th be with you as well.
“At the next stop a young, blonde, khaki-clad Ukrainian border guard stepped on board and peered at me curiously. ‘You know Ukraine is at war? You not afraid?’ she asked.

‘The bomb shelter is in the basement,’ declared the receptionist, hours later, when I finally checked into a hotel in Lviv. Only then did I use Wifi to download the recommended app, ‘Air Alert’, onto my phone. It would act as my own personal alarm if an air raid warning was issued for the city, and was surreally voiced by Mark Hamill, the actor who became famous in the late 1970s for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films. A siren sounded at the beginning of a raid, and when it ended – anything from thirty minutes to three or more hours later – Hamill’s voice announced: ‘Attention, the air alert is over. May the force be with you.’

@brightwalldarkroom.com Thought you’d like Gregory Corso’s wisdom from “How Not To Die”: “To the movies --- to the movies that's where I hurry to when I feel I'm going to die So far it's worked.” (Source: www.babelmatrix.org/works/en/Cor... (Site translates, thus the title below says (English))
Gregory Corso’s poem “How Not To Die”, with a picture of a relaxed, smiling man with rumpled hair in a rumpled work shirt. The poem reads

Around people
If I feel I’m gonna die
I excuse myself
Telling them “I gotta go!”
“Go where?” They wanna know
I don’t answer
I just get outa there
away from them
because somehow
they sense something wrong
and never know what to do
it scares them such suddenness
How awful
to just sit there
and they asking:
“Are you okay?”
“Can we get you something?”
“Want to lie down?”
Ye gods! people!
who wants to die amongst people?!
Especially when they can’t do shit
To the movies— to the movies
that’s where I hurry to
when I feel I’m going to die
So far it’s worked.

“You pointed at a photo of a plate / of macaroni cheese then a photo of a glass of wine. / ‘Great.’ // You coughed up a mothball. / It sat on the table between us like a sad, sucked imperial mint.” — @carolinebirduk.bsky.social, “Naphthalene Heights” @carcanet.bsky.social
NAPHTHALENE HEIGHTS. The hotel was called Naphthalene Heights which I thought was a strange name for a hotel but the poetry festival had booked me the room so I had no choice. Besides, apart from the name, it was a completely normal hotel. You were waiting for me in the lobby. You couldn’t speak. At the end of Alcestis by Euripides, Alcestis is brought back from the underworld, mute. Her body has resurrected but her voice remains dead. “Is that what happened to you?” You nodded. You still had soil in your hair. “How did you die? Who killed you?” We sat down in the bar. You ate a peanut and looked at me.
You were so beautiful I felt a commotion in the pit of my throat like my words were fighting over you. “Shall we order?” There was a Fun Fact section under the children’s menu with colourful lettering inside speech bubbles rising from the mouth of a cartoon snake. FUN FACT: In the past naphthalene was administered orally to kill parasitic worms in livestock. It wasn’t a cartoon snake, it was a cartoon worm. FUN FACT: When you smell mothballs you are inhaling Naphthalene. “Hotel food can be a little bland. We could eat somewhere else?” You looked at me so sadly I felt continental plates separating
in my forehead. I studied the menu again. FUN FACT: Small children are at risk of eating mothballs because they look like candy or other treats. The food choices were standard. Burgers, pies, ravioli. You pointed at a photo of a plate of macaroni cheese then a photo of a glass of wine. “Great.” You coughed up a mothball. It sat on the table between us like a sad, sucked imperial mint. “Please say something.” I handed you a pen. “Write something on a napkin?” It struck me that you were the death of the world. I felt a terrible pain. I looked down. A small hole was forming in my palm like a ghost was
driving a pencil through it. “What’s happening?” You took my hand and stared at me through its hole. Tiny holes were forming all over your face. Pinpricks of light were shining out of you. I realized “holy” was a literal term. I didn’t want to lose you to the glare of the scene behind. I could already see chairs and tables through you. I could see the bar. We were half-hotel. I remembered that night you kissed me in the car park of The Nobody Inn, you’d said “In the next world maybe.” We held our disappearing hands. Caroline Bird

“I hope you licked the ends of your colored / pencils. Also, that you carried a Trapper Keeper. The first time a girl / touched you, I hope you had graham crumbs on your mouth. I hope / she wore her brother’s hunting coat” —Kiki Petrosino, “Valentine” @sarabandebooks.bsky.social
VALENTINE. I hope your father built a treehouse in the soft shade below the creek. I hope it glimmered there, between two poplars. I hope you stood at your mother’s sleeve while she fixed madeleines for breakfast. It was Easter. All six of your aunts adored you. For your country project you picked Tunisia because of its peanut shape. Which was your first rock show? Mine was Milli Vanilli. I hope you licked the ends of your colored pencils. Also, that you carried a Trapper Keeper. The first time a girl touched you, I hope you had graham crumbs on your mouth. I hope she wore her brother’s hunting coat, latchless. Do you also dislike beets? I hope so. I hope you’re reading all the classics, like Moby Dick. When the preacher climbs the ladder made of ropes? That’s the best. I did that once, at an amusement park. I believe the stars get brighter when it’s cold. Do you like riding in convertibles? I like riding in convertibles. I like how sunflowers turn themselves into big radios. I usedto live where canola oil’s from. I used to eat fried zucchini flowers and tomato salad. What do you like for breakfast? Do you listen to BBC News? When you make someone a sandwich, I hope you trim the casings from each slice of salami. No one likes to eat those. I try to think of what you’ll need from Walgreens. Maybe you’ve got contacts. In which case, you can just use my solution. What diseases run in your family? Will we have to worry about strokes? I’ll probably live to be quite old. I hope you’ll let me lay out your pajamas. Not every day, but sometimes. Will you eat bran patties for breakfast then? What about those S-cookies? Those come from Sicily. I’ve seen them in the shops. I’ve seen women in gold slingbacks on the bus. That’s OK, but I hope we’ll have our own car. I know a church with a dark ceiling. The Normans built it. It’s sad until you drop coins into this special lamp: clink, clink. After that, it’s different, see. Kiki Petrosino
