What is it about genai text that my eyes slide off. It's almost impressive how it is in many respects normal writing (words! In english! in order!), but there is something ineffable in its structure that reads like word salad

Where I am is I struggle to quantify productivity to this degree at all. Is it making me faster today, within a specific scope? Yes. Is that denying me the ability to be faster tomorrow? Maybe? I think there is a reason knowledge work and productivity have resisted accurate measurement for decades.

This is why I don't believe people who say they are 50-100x more productive. Buddy I'm not even sure in the grand scheme of things if I'm 1x more productive. The industry is still working this stuff out, everyone pretending otherwise is delusional.

Maybe it's like buses, you know, you wait and wait for one, and then the bus comes, it does fine commercially but the bus driver still gets laid off. ... wait.

It is like I hear marvel movies are, where by the time the writer gets there they have already worked out (and filmed!) most of the action set pieces and locations and it's the writer's job to stitch it together?

I'm cool with sex in games as I am in film etc if it's there to develop characters. I less like having sex be a reward for a quest path, and so romancable characters tend to give me the heebie jeebies. I really liked the relationship in Haven. More of that please.

Because after 15 years of austerity and bad covid planning there is an enormous backlog. If you aren't being booked in straight away that means there are people sicker than you who are.

This article doesn't know what a sprint is, so it's kind of hard to trust what people have said to the reporter has been adequately translated

Stefan du Fresne @sdufresne.info · 10/08/2026
> A "sprint" is term for a common period in technology companies in which people work long hours in the weeks leading up to a release of a new feature or product. No, it isn't? A sprint is just a block of time. I've worked in sprints anywhere from 1-4 weeks. This article is no good.

Another failure though: presuming people eat some platonic three slices, when really that's the flaw of averages. No one only eats three slices of **good pizza**, and people eat 0-0.5 slices of Dominos. Just because it _averages_ out to three doesn't mean that's a useful number!

Stefan du Fresne @sdufresne.info · 05/08/2026
what an insane thing to ask an LLM to work out for you. Not only can LLMs not do maths properly, but they will never contradict you, as they correctly should, and tell you never to buy dominos

Especially in software dev, it's very pernicious and normalised. Even if you presume there is value there, it's very hard to know where that value starts and stops, or when that value is realised or "unrealised" (eg 80% of effort of a line of code is maintenance, so is fast now actually good?)

If the US is anything like the UK it's even worse: averaging prices hides that food the poor disproportionately buy, eg the cheapest tins and staples, have 2-5x'd since COVID, as supermarkets either increase prices or discontinue discount brands

Talon has a very hard difficulty curve. I've been using it for 4 years as my primary way of using a computer at work, and it's still hard. I do recommend it though. The slack channel is very helpful! I play games again. I can cook again. I can garden again. Life saving stuff.

damn, so 5-6 years of pre-production? I'm not in the industry, so maybe I misunderstand the term, but that seems, like, 5x too long.

Stefan du Fresne @sdufresne.info · 17/07/2026
TBF TES6 wasn't in preproduction when they announced that right? They just did it because of pressure to say something. I mean I still think it will take forever to release, but for different, layoff-ey reasons

those common beliefs are very funny, and often their interpretation is entirely unrelated to the question being asked. "AI games have thrown together store pages" "no actually they are on average longer" ??? That is not a response to the question lmao

Let's start from the other end so you have to do the work in this slippery slope argument. If you have a child, and that child writes a novel, did you write a novel? How about if you pay someone to write one? What if you first provide the outline? Where do you draw the line?
100
Stefan du Fresne @sdufresne.info · 30/06/2026
I consider "did you write that novel, or did the pencil?" style arguments to not be in good faith

Here is an analogy that I enjoy: if your parter cheats on you but you never learn about it, does that make it OK? I want art to be made by humans, because otherwise to me it is not art. It doesn't matter if an LLM can generate art as good as a human can, I still care.
