Party Freak lyrics sound like they were written three minutes before they recorded the track

I think I heard the Club Nouveau version of Lean on Me well before Withers' original. Thus my ears can't hear it as a trendy take on a classic - it's just a classic unto itself. Or maybe the song is like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," where it doesn't matter who sings it, it's always moving.

The Adonis track is terrific. But the memories of 10-year-old me calling the local radio station to request Rumors came flooding back, and I can't deny that feeling.

It was my first too so I’ll always love it (although Here Comes the Warm Jets supplanted it as my favorite - also thanks to Fripp’s soloing on “Some of Them Are Old”

Last in this roundup, the debut from Jessica Pratt, I did not pick up from a store. As I was unpacking in the new house I came across this unopened box, and it turned out my wife had mail ordered this… years ago? And just never opened the box when it arrived in the mail? Nice surprise.

The Billie album - I really love that album and I know it will go over well with the family during dinner so that was an easy pick.

I dithered between PJ Harvey’s DRY, a recent Courtney Barnett album, and… something else I’m now forgetting. Dry is not my favorite PJ album but it’s still a classic. If it were a different Barnett album I might have chosen differently.

Still ruing that I’d missed out on some great krautrock classics, literally the first thing I see in the first bin is Ashra’s BLACKOUTS. And soon after that I find Eno’s ANOTHER GREEN WORLD for a very affordable $20. I like both of these more than La Düsseldorf so this felt weirdly fated!

Driving back to the west side I still had some time kill before parental responsibilities required me to do other things. So I pulled off the freeway in West Adams and went to High Fidelity, one of my favorites.

I love what the store is all about and I wish them nothing but success. And hopefully I’ll get back there sometime and maybe some of those albums will still be there.

But the store is attached to a bar and apparently they were doing a matinee show, and at one point the owner just stepped out to go help get the show going and… no one was there to ring me up. I waited a long time. So I just… put everything back.

It’s a well-curated store and the owner seemed super nice. Lots of very pricey vinyl but a great selection of more affordable stuff too. I found both La Düsseldorf albums, two Steve Earle records, Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies, and the first OMD album

Yesterday I was in downtown LA so I decided to pop over the Glassell Park to check out Permanent Records—a store/venue I’ve really wanted to try but is not typically convenient for me. This was my first time.

It’s been TWO MONTHS since I last went record shopping. We moved (not far… perhaps the most annoying way to move), and we traveled. But we’re back home, I got the turntable set up again, and I’m back on it.
Five records. Top row:
Ashra: Blackouts
Jessica Pratt: Jessica Pratt
Brian Eno: Another Green World
PJ Harvey: Dry
Billie Eilish: When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

Jackie Jackson died two days ago. His death did not get the fanfare that the big celebrities get but I assure you he was no less than any of them: a titan astride the earth. In this thread, a few of the songs he played bass on. You know these songs. You know their bass parts. youtu.be/DKVB_CtU8XQ

I didn’t writer a DC for @bestalbumbrackets.bsky.social, but thought I’d share this story from 13 years ago, about choosing a mixtape for labor and my second son’s first song. Bjork’s Vespertine factors in, and this is what I think of whenever I hear that album. I think you should vote for it! 🧵

Though their genres aren’t the same, I put Roger Miller in the same class as Harry Nilsson: the melodies just pour out, and the songs are consistently a joy (except when they’re meant to be gut punches!)

Admittedly there are a couple of biggies from this year that I’ve still yet to see, chief among them Renoir’s LE GRAND ILLUSION, and the Fred Astaire vehicle SHALL WE DANCE. Expect that both will wind up high on the list once I eventually see them.

Time for my roughly monthly movie-watching update: my favorite films of 1937. Top of the list is Julien Duvivier’s PÉPÉ LE MOKO, an excellent crime film starring Jean Gabin in one of his best roles. So many great shots here as Duvivier captures the maze-like underworld of the Casbah.

At the time I really liked it but also felt it was the first time they'd shown signs of wheel-spinning. After that I fell off with Low for about 10 years. But when my love for them was rekindled I went back to TWLITF and felt like it was just about flawless. It's definitely Top 5, maybe Top 3.

Voted Jay-Z but honestly not mad at the result shaping up here. Certainly the big hit from Kylie’s record is one of the best in the tourney. I don’t care much for the rest of the album. OTOH I don’t think The Blueprint is Jay’s best so you know, whatever
