Jackie Jackson died two days ago. His death did not get the fanfare that the big celebrities get but I assure you he was no less than any of them: a titan astride the earth. In this thread, a few of the songs he played bass on. You know these songs. You know their bass parts. youtu.be/DKVB_CtU8XQ

Moved to a new house today. It took twelve hours and two full moving van loads to get it all here. But it’s here. Everything still in boxes, but here!

I didn’t writer a DC for @bestalbumbrackets.bsky.social, but thought I’d share this story from 13 years ago, about choosing a mixtape for labor and my second son’s first song. Bjork’s Vespertine factors in, and this is what I think of whenever I hear that album. I think you should vote for it! 🧵

Though their genres aren’t the same, I put Roger Miller in the same class as Harry Nilsson: the melodies just pour out, and the songs are consistently a joy (except when they’re meant to be gut punches!)

Time for my roughly monthly movie-watching update: my favorite films of 1937. Top of the list is Julien Duvivier’s PÉPÉ LE MOKO, an excellent crime film starring Jean Gabin in one of his best roles. So many great shots here as Duvivier captures the maze-like underworld of the Casbah.

The music at this airport bar went from a live version of VU’s “Sweet Jane,” Canned Heat, and a Neil Young deep cut to… Red Hot Chili Peppers. I guess there was a shift change.

Took me about a month to catch up on many 1936 films and now here it is: my favorites from that year. 1935 was a dearth of great movies but 36 was chock-a-block. Maybe no outright masterpieces but lots of really good films. boxd.it/WscuQ

Hit up two stores yesterday. First was my usual stop, Atomic Records in Burbank. I heard this Lilac Time album for the first time only a few days ago. I liked it! So when I saw it leaping out of the bins at me I had to pick it up. Also grabbed the classic NOU, taking me back to my high school days.
Six records on a wooden table.
Top row:
Nation of Ulysses: PLAYS PRETTY FOR BABY
The Lilac Time: THE LILAC TIME
XTC: ENGLISH SETTLEMENT

Bottom row:
My Morning Jacket: Z
Alvvays: BLUE REV

My #LastFourWatched for #LetterboxdFriday: rewatched Rogue One, my first time since Andor concluded last year. I feel like Andor definitely improves the experience of this film. two from 1936: the romantically confused Men Are Not Gods, and the flawed-but-fascinating sci-fi Things To Come

This week’s #LastFourWatched: The Odyssey has improved in my mind since watching it. Would really like to re-watch soon. First time seeing My Man Godfrey—a fun screwball that also features a somewhat muted William Powell. I admit to some distraction while I watched and would like to see it again.

After watching 2001 on the big screen last week, we watched Interstellar on the big screen today. Boy, seeing the two in succession like that, you really appreciate how the lack of dialogue in Kubrick’s film adds to the awe of that film—and the opposite for Nolan.

My #LastFourWatched for #LetterboxdFriday — a comedic take (??) on The Maltese Falcon, an early Ingrid Bergman melodrama, a first-time watch of a little western called THE SEARCHERS, and a 1935 drama from Japan. Loved seeing The Searchers in 70mm, though it didn’t live up to my expectations.

Dreamt that Quentin Tarantino released a digitally enhanced version of Pulp Fiction, much like George Lucas did for Star Wars. Except the only thing QT updated was John Travolta talking about how expensive his milkshake was. Digitally adjusted for inflation, it’s now a $12 shake.

Took my kids to see 2001 in 70mm at the Aero tonight. They both struggled with what it all meant (of course!), but we talked about it for the whole car ride home and then some, and that has NEVER happened with any other movie we’ve watched together.

lol at all the members of Slint saying they don’t know what time signature “Nosferatu Man” @lifeoftherecord.bsky.social I’ve talked to so many people who are flummoxed by that song. For my book I asked a friend/drummer to try to break it down for me, which is how I arrived at this description.
“Nosferatu Man” contains probably the most rudimentary quiet verse / loud chorus on the album. On the heels of “Breadcrumb Trail,” it becomes apparent how this element of the band’s sound became synonymous with Slint-as-adjective. But at the same time “Nosferatu Man” feels less concerned with its juxtapositions and more focused on creating intensity through rhythm. The song is dizzying in its jumps from one time signature to the next. The first verse is in 5/4, followed by a pause in which Walford clicks a single bar in 3/4 before the band launches into a chorus in 6/4. They repeat this pattern for a second verse and chorus before moving to the bridge, where things get especially complicated. Story-wise the chase between the Prince and the girl escalates into a cat-and-mousegame. The music reflects this polyrhythmically as the band splices into two separate but simultaneous meters, in effect circling each other. Walford hunkers down into a quarter-note-based kick/snare rhythm while Pajo, McMahan, and Brashear play a series of triplets, floating in and out of phase with Walford, who occasionally adds an extra beat to keep things from spiraling into cacophony. They sync up again for a third verse in 5/4, in which the prince’s “teeth touched her skin,” then unravel again into an extended polyrhythmic bridge—this time evened out to stay locked into Walford’s steady quarter note—before Walford and Brashear return to the 6/4 chorus section while Pajo and McMahon continue to stab at their stop-start chords in three. The song finally concludes with the girl gone and the prince holding his dead queen. The band lands together on a final G chord, dangling ominously in the air as the prince remains alone.
