Totally passed me by when it first aired, but it's great!

One of the things I really liked about Fringe is that it's driven by a father-son relationship which is complicated and full of guilt, resentment and anger, but constantly moves towards a resolution of softness, kindness, understanding and open emotionality, and sees those qualities as valuable.

Finished my first run-through of Fringe last night, and loved it. I know some people couldn't get on board with the last season but I thought it was great. And did a thing which is rare with this type of show - really nailed the ending. John Noble as Walter Bishop(s) was the real heart of it all.

#87: Kiwifruit
A screenshot of a headline to a Guardian column by Adrian Chiles. It reads 'My latest discovery? You can eat the skin of a kiwifruit - and the benefits are myriad'

(Alt-text for next image)
I was carrying out maintenance on the hull when the ion drive exploded. The force of the blast sent me hurtling away from the body of the craft, where I could only watch helplessly as it ruptured and burst, section by section, expelling the rest of the crew into space. While I was kept anchored to a large segment of the living quarters by my tether, my crewmates - my friends - went sailing on by me, already suffocated by the airless void, scattershot corpses heading for oblivion.
That was six months ago. My life since has been amongst the debris. With all long-range comms disabled or destroyed, I am adrift, lost. But not alone.
In the first weeks after my shipwrecking, I became aware of another creature living amidst the remnants. I don’t know its name or provenance, but I suspect it is some kind of space-borne parasite. My first glimpse of it came as I was scavenging in the lower decks. Turning a corner, I found the body of an engineer, splayed out on the floor, its chest pulsating, so at first I thought him alive. Then I saw it - a large shape, near-transparent, a thin proboscis lodged in between the engineer’s ribs, sucking on his flesh. As it sucked, the human’s body seemed to deflate, while at the same time the creature’s transparency began to colour pink.
(Continued on next alt-text)(Continued from previous alt-text)
Since then, I have come across countless other bodies, some stripped of flesh, some of bone, some of skin. And the creature I have seen many times too - each time pinker, bloodier, as though building itself layer by layer into completeness.
I believe that the creature’s survival depends on its ability to adapt to its circumstances, to create itself anew from its surroundings. Gradually it is becoming bigger, stronger, smarter.
Weaponless, stranded, I am helpless to defend myself against it.
Unless by doing what it does.
For months I have been collecting the creature’s excretions and using them as fertilizer in the improvised greenhouse I have erected in the ship’s sauna. The only plants I was able to scavenge from the ship’s garden were a handful of established kiwi fruit vines and these I have nurtured as though they were my own children.
A week ago I carried out my first harvest - a bowl of mature fruits, bred on the waste from the creature. These I devoured, from seed to skin - the skin, I soon discovered, being the repository of the most useful nutrients - savouring the sweet taste of fresh food after so long living on dried rations.
The results have been promising. I no longer need to use my suit when travelling between the broken parts of the ship; breathing has become optional. Even better, I have found that by ingesting small fragments of the debris through my newly-grown proboscis, I have been able to develop a new skin made of that same metal.
Like the creature I am becoming what I need to be in order to survive.
And if I fear that my humanity is drifting away like the corpses of my friends, into oblivion? That is just the price I have to pay for survival.]

#86: Villages
A screengrab of a headline to a Guardian column by Adrian Chiles. It reads 'From Bentley Pauncefoot to Yetts O'Muckhart, I'm obsessed with Britain's weirdly named villages'.

(Alt-text for next image)

There is a map beneath the one you see on your phone and laptop screens, beneath the atlas page and the Ordnance Survey paper and the paint on the toy globe that rotates beneath your palm. You can’t see it but, deep inside, in the spaces that sit between the thoughts, you know it’s there; it holds towns and hamlets and settlements and parishes. Secret places, hungry places.
(Continued on next alt-text)(Cont. from previous alt-text)
I was once like you, oblivious. My little van would take me up hill and down dale, called out to wherever I was needed. Emergency plumbers, 24/7, ‘no job too big, no job too small’ (as was painted on the side of the vehicle); inside, my tools, spare pipes, various connectors and valves - all that was needed to complete the job, to make things right, to get things running properly again.
It was in those hours between the jobs, when I was parked up in a layby, or a service station car park, drinking a coffee and eating a scotch egg while gazing idly at a road sign that my thoughts first turned to What Lies Beneath.
The names are the key, you see. Tedstone Wafer, Papplewick, Lickfold, Puddleford - these are but glamours concealing the true natures of these places, magic spells designed to hide from us the truth.
The truth is that they feed on us, not our flesh but our spirit. Each Upton Snodsbury and Gigglewick is in fact a ravenous maw, its ancient, cursed name corrupted into something palatable, even ridiculous, to better hide its intentions. Countless voracious mouths, pushing up from the body of the ground beneath, connected by veins that spread invisible through the earth, sucking at our lifeforce, masticating our souls into a palatable mush, to feed the belly of the Gargantuan, The Beast Who Sits At The Heart Of Things.
Every Thrumpton, every Thornton-le-Beans, every Crapstone and Twatt, is an open, pulsating orifice, and we are but the chewed-up chum caught between its razored teeth.
I’ve tried to explain this all to the other lads back at the depot, but they just don’t want to know. I fear for them, and for what each call-out is doing to their souls.
For myself, I have a solution at hand. A valve, inserted (with some great effort, and pain) into the space beneath my ribs (from whence I surmise the lifeforce is drawn), with a small lever attached, ready to arrest the flow.
When next I visit Bentley Pauncefoot, I will be ready.

'Erotic thriller' is pushing it a bit - unless your conception of the genre includes Malick-style montages, Lynchian nightmares and sequences from the POV of a cow - but compelling nonetheless, if a little unbalanced. Plays like an updated folk tale/murder ballad Southern Gothic.

I really like Dolores Hitchens (aka D.B. Olsen). These books are quite cosy, but she also wrote hardboiled (eg Sleep With Slander) and more psychological stuff. She even wrote a series of railway crimes novels with her husband Bert. And her book Fool's Gold was the basis for Godard's Bande à part

Screenshot: "The central character is a murderous loyalist whose hatred of Catholics is made panicky and unstable by his possession of a dodgy taig surname: Kelly. Like everyone else in the book, he knows that these routine domestic details have a volatile resonance in a world where tit-for-tat prey is picked out almost - but not quite - at random. 'Inhabitants of the city were adept at deciphering the clues to religion and status contained in an address. Sectarian killers worked on that basis, picking up their victims according to the street they lived in. Your address was a thing to be guarded as if the words themselves possessed secret talismanic properties. Your name was replete with power and hidden malevolence."

Also the cycle of 'will we/won't we get renewed' often starts to mess with things. Like how Elementary has a perfectly satisfactory ending with Season 6, then has to undo it a bit because they get a Season 7.
