When you get to those moments, you will absolutely see the "Ahh....not great" that coat them. But then you just get past them, and get back to some really cool stuff that makes those dips feel almost alien.

A lot do, and a certain island. But with how strong Impel Down is and some later stuff/characters, Oda can do it well, just has some not great portrayals. To me it's partially due to how he writes any character is equally capable of being in a gag or at the heart of something serious.
