Happy Birthday Phoebe Atwood Taylor, 1909, Boston. She is best known for her Asey Mayo books - the "Codfish Sherlock" who investigated crime on Cape Cod. The books are funny, well plotted, and offer a look at a slice of American life at a particular time and place.

We see so many birds in our backyard this spring. In addition to sparrows, chickadees, blue jays and finches, we get a northern flicker now and then. He loves to peck at the vents on the roofs, which sounds like a machine gun inside!

"Bordeaux Glow" by James Michalopoulos.
The image shows a vibrant, expressionist oil painting of a narrow New Orleans street at night. The scene is characterized by distorted perspectives and heavy texture, hallmarks of the artist James Michalopoulos.

Ostia was the port of Rome, and many mosaics in the town have a distinctly maritime theme. This one's no exception - Triton (mythological sea god) and a nereid (sea nymph) in the centre at the Baths of Buticosus. #MosaicMonday #RomanArchaeology #Archaeology

Indoor photo. The face of a small white dog with black ears and eye patch is resting on an embroidery hoop. The hoop has white fabric with a design of a small bird sitting on a coffee pot filled with flowers. The design is partially stitched. The dog was called Blake and he was the best boy and I miss him so much.

#MosaicMonday takes us to the #CapitolineMuseums in #Rome to find the most famous #mosaic in history, a copy of a work in #Pergamon by the mosaicist #Sosus, found at #VillaAdriana in 1737. It had many copies subsequently, and became a kind of shorthand for #classical taste. #AncientBluesky 🏺
COPY OF THE MOSAIC OF THE DOVES BY SOSUS, C. 125 CE. CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS

The wealthy churchman Giuseppe Furietti bought excavation rights to the ruins of the so-called Accademia of Hadrian's Villa in 1736. His dig immediately produced the thrilling discovery of the two "Furietti Centaurs", now also in the same museum, and on Good Friday 1737 this emblema was found, at the centre of a large rectangular room. It is a copy of a mosaic mentioned by Pliny the Elder in Book 36 of his Natural History from 77 CE: "At Pergamum there is a remarkable dove done in mosaic, drinking, and darkening the water with the shadow of its head; other doves are preening themselves on the rim of the bowl." This copy matches Pliny's description, and was often known as "Pliny's Doves". Acquired from Furietti's heirs, it entered the Capitoline collections in 1765. It became the most celebrated mosaic of the C18, reproduced in many different forms, and had a colossal impact on art from neoclassicism onward.

A narrow dirt path winds through a lush forest, captured in black-and-white infrared photography. Foliage glows bright white against a dramatic cloudy sky, with a large ivy-covered tree trunk on the right. The path disappears into the distance, flanked by dense undergrowth and overhanging branches.

A vibrant, vertical landscape photograph of a calm, shallow creek winding through a dense forest in springtime. On the left foreground, a prominent tree trunk leans heavily over the water at an angle, creating a natural frame. The lush green canopy of leaves fills the upper portion of the frame, letting a patch of bright blue sky peak through the center. The still surface of the creek creates a perfect, mirror-like reflection of the bright green trees and the blue sky, while the sandy, root-lined banks of the stream are visible in the immediate foreground.
