Fig. 6 (shortened, full legend in paper): Proposed regulatory model for SlPHYB1/B2-mediated control of fruit cuticle deposition. Upon red light absorption, activated SlPHYB1/B2 (Pfr form) represses the downstream positive regulators SlPIF3/4 and SlBBX28, which otherwise physically interact to activate the expression of cuticle-related genes. Concurrent down-regulation of genes from pathways related to the biosynthesis and activation of fatty acids (FAs) likely reduces the pool of activated FAs feeding into cutin and wax biosynthetic pathways, thereby constraining cuticle formation and resulting in a thinner protective layer over the fruit epidermal cells (left). By contrast, conversion of SlPHYB1/B2 to the inactive Pr form under far-red-enriched light conditions relieves this repression, leading to increased cuticle load (right).
