I used to be a professional online community builder (1995-2020). I have eclectic interests: coffee roasting, kludge DIY, 16thC Germany, History of Surgery... Now, I just have opinions: all of them are wrong, but some of them are useful. Willing to learn.

I grew up near a SAC base and radiation sickness wasn't even on the menu. Graffiti at high school read: In case of nuclear attack, 1) face toward Castle (the AF base) 2) bend over 3) kiss your ass goodbye

The moderation values of blacksky make my heart sing! So happy to see such a shining example of community-first principles in action. Anyone who considers themselves an online community pressional not paying attention here is missing out.

I found a linked in profile with a JV listed as president of Revolution Monitoring that also listed Dallas seminary in education. I might have that one off. It is possible there are two people with the same name that went to the same seminary school.

That’s not our boy. Ours is in Dallas. And middle initial is T (from his Twitter handle). The guy protesting the church matches the profile picture to a tee.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

I'm definitely not paying. I do use Vivaldi browser which has some really good ad blocking. So, I pulled up the site on a browser that does not block ads. I see two really poorly placed ads that lead to asking for a credit card. Are you seeing something similar to these?
Screenshot of the Ongoing History of Protest Music with two hand drawn orange circles around ads that say, "continue to start. Open." and "activate account" Screenahot of what happens when clicking on the "activate" ad. It reads "mobile activation. Continue. Access in 3 easy steps. Step 1"

This discussion of literacy crisis is giving me an opportunity to reflect on the work I still have to do to not just rebuild my ability to read for long periods, but also tackle fiction that goes way beyond my personal experiences.

Now, some of this is because in the past two year, I have experienced some profound loss and have had to process my own grief. A lot of it is that I had been reading passively (coping for depression) for so long that I need to rebuild my active reading skills.

It was a dystopian novella that involved a disease that caused a lot of death and loss of loved ones around the protagonist. The way they grieved was *very* different to the way I view loss, death, and grief. And I recoiled. My own reaction clouded my ability to see this other way of grieving.

Not just read, but properly take in ideas and synthesize them into my own thoughts rather than loosely connected thoughts and phrases of others. I took on getting back to reading full books, but I had a bad reaction to a book I just finished. I think it's because I was viewing it as a mirror.

I haven't been able to concentrate on reading for more than about 30 minutes for at least a decade. Books get started, then dropped. My Libby TBR list is about 400 books. I want to read. Recently, I have been making good mental health progress and have been recapturing my ability to think.

Goddammit. I feel called out. I'm not angry or accusing OP of any wrong doing, just feeling the need to springboard off this thread as self-reflection. I've been digging myself out of suicidal depression for the last 8 years. A symptom has been trouble with the cognitive work of long reads.

If I laugh too hard, I can pass out. (Vasovagal syncope) Roughly, thinky-brain signals neurons around the heart (the hearty-brain) overriding breathy-brain. Blood flow drops and thinky-brain stops thinking and breathy-brain grabs the wheel and stares *hard* at thinky-brain.

Within the last full year, I showered on average once every 11.4 days (down from 10.7 last year). I had a 1% higher mood, on average, on days I showered vs days I didn't. My longest sustained shower streak was 1 day, and longest gap with no showering was 29 days.

we tracked months of rent payments to an estimated 13,000 families. the expected cost of rehousing those families, had they entered eviction, would be north of $218 million dollars. keeping them housed cost around $38-40 million

I did not know about the bomber association and I grew up in the 80s near a SAC base that flew B-52 bombers daily. Growing up, I thought it was a vague reference to nuclear apocalypse, because growing up in the 80s a lot of music was referencing nuclear apocalypse.
