This is a particularly British enquiry: I don’t know of any other country that has investigated the targeting of left-wing groups like this. But my assumption is that the security services in every Western country did this, so that there is a long list of similar atrocities waiting to be found.

Not sure how prevalent this is, but in the rural Atlantic Canada communities I grew up in, there is always a bedroom on the ground floor for older family members to die in. Because those stairs will kill you. It’s also weird inheriting that bedroom after a grandparent has died.

You have to think that it is fine to use a large dataset cobbled together from estimates derived from multiple uncalibrated instruments, arbitrarily adjusted post hoc, occasionally made up, massaged, etc. to make sweeping statements about all of humanity. 30/34

Exactly this. I would take it further, in that that exclusion itself was politicized on identity grounds. Look at how fast the term ‘snowflake’ disappeared as a pejorative, when the students and faculty expressing fear belonged to groups that universities and commentators actually cared about.

The tolerance for bad behavior among ‘race realists’ is off the charts, and always devolves to claims about academic freedom. Cofnas was suspended because he said that he was not doing the work he was represented as doing. His hero, Richard Lynn, faked data. But but but… ‘academic freedom!!!’

there are now almost 600 signatories to the pro-cofnas letter. of the first 100 i examined, _two_ spoke out against campus crackdowns on pro-palestinian speech. 75 said nothing and 23 spoke out _in support of the crackdowns_!

One thing to note…start-up funds are not external grants. Rather, they are investments -by the university- in the career of a new scholar (de Vries in this case). When such funds are not being used for the purposes claimed, universities take that pretty seriously.

Interesting that @akoustov.bsky.social wasn’t motivated to sign letters of support for any of the faculty who have been fired for political reasons in Texas, Florida and etc over the last few years. In fact, I don’t remember support for those people from -any- of the signatories of this letter.

Here is the full suspension letter from UGent that was sent to Nathan Cofnas, it shows ample reason for his suspension and potential termination. Including breach of contract, using the University of Ghent’s name and legitimacy to promote his racial supremacist views and causing reputational damage.

In the american context communism is mostly unrelated to economics. Any progressive redistributive policy is communism, as is any egalitarianism of race, gender, or sexual orientation. Integration is communism, women in the workplace is communism, marriage equality is communism. It's deeply stupid.
