the one thing that slightly irritates me about this is that it essentially privileges private datasets over public ones obviously "public dataset of all books ever" is a plain violation of copyright but it would also be way better for the world than book datasets being limited to big companies

This seems like a really good ruling. Training is legal, but pirating piles of content remains illegal. And, verbatim responses expose the LLM provider to liability.

Great piece about AI on NYT Magazine. As usual, Bluesky responses do not disappoint.
ROOSE I think so too. Look, I am not an A.I. Pollyanna or even, on some days, much of an optimist. I think there are real harms these systems are capable of and much bigger harms they will be capable of in the future. But I think addressing those harms requires having a clear view of the technology and what it can and can’t do. Sometimes when I hear people arguing about how A.I. systems are stupid and useless, it’s almost as if you had an antinuclear movement that didn’t admit fission was real — like, looking at a mushroom cloud over Los Alamos, and saying, “They’re just raising money, this is all hype.” Instead of, “Oh, my God, this thing could blow up the world.”NEWTON Yeah, I think so much A.I. denialism comes off as a kind of wishful thinking — which, again, I’m sympathetic to, because in a lot of ways it would be easier if all this stuff was fake and was going to fall into the ocean the way that cryptocurrency did after its 2021 peak. But as journalists, the more we talk to people, the less likely we think that is.

The NYT Magazine asked me and @caseynewton.bsky.social to open their AI issue by talking about how we use AI, why it's not going away, and how you can't be a serious critic if you're in denial about how useful it is. Bluesky's gonna love this one! www.nytimes.com/2025/06/16/m...

ChatGPT has largely replaced Google for me.
A ChatGPT screenshot; The user asks "what percentage of chinese exports go to the usa?" and ChatGPT answers "14%", with a large number of linked citations to documents from the web.

The replies on this are overwhelmed with wish-casting by people afraid of change. If you can’t find a use for LLMs, that’s you. They may not be easy to use but for people who can make use of them they are incredibly useful.

No one I've talked to or have heard on TV today, could explain how Donald Trump came up with today's tariff numbers. I checked the other platform and renowned business writer James Surowiecki offered this. It makes sense as an explanation less so for economic policy #Trump #Tariffs

Here's the table of contents for my lengthy new piece on how I use LLMs to help me write code simonwillison.net/2025/Mar/11/...
If someone tells you that coding with LLMs is easy they are (probably unintentionally) misleading you. They may well have stumbled on to patterns that work, but those patterns do not come naturally to everyone.

I’ve been getting great results out of LLMs for code for over two years now. Here’s my attempt at transferring some of that experience and intution to you.

Set reasonable expectations
Account for training cut-off dates
Context is king
Ask them for options
Tell them exactly what to do
You have to test what it writes!
Remember it’s a conversation
Use tools that can run the code for you
Vibe-coding is a great way to learn
A detailed example
Be ready for the human to take over
The biggest advantage is speed of development
LLMs amplify existing expertise
Bonus: answering questions about codebases

part of the divide we’ve been seeing in AI discourse is due to the fact that the general public has only experienced messing around with lower-tier free models — they’re not experiencing the flagship models until quite a bit later so their mental model of the intelligence level is lagging

Ok, quick thread on why DeepSeek is blowing up assumptions about LLMs and maybe the whole (U.S.) AI industry. DeepSeek is an AI lab funded by a Chinese hedge fund, their AI code is open source, meaning freely available to use, which most big U.S. models (aside from Meta’s) are not. That’s the start…

He’s right in principle but wrong in practice. LLMs can’t write books of any quality. And when they can you will not “stock” them. The value of an LLM generated book would be the ability to create one on demand to your own highly whimsical requirements.

I think everyone who has an opnion, good or bad, about LLMs, should read how @simonwillison.net has summer up what’s happened in the space this year. He’s the most credible, most independent, most honest, and most technically fluent person watching the space. simonwillison.net/2024/Dec/31/...

One of the most important debates in tech right now is the group of folks who think AI is fake and sucks vs. the people who think AI is real and dangerous. I wrote about why I'm in the latter camp, and talked about my differences with Gary Marcus www.platformer.news/ai-skeptics-...
Most people know these systems are flaws, and adjust their expectations and usage accordingly. The “AI is fake and sucks” crowd is hyper-fixated on the things it can’t do — count the number of r’s in strawberry, figure out that the Onion was joking when it told us to eat rocks — and weirdly uninterested in the things it can.

And that’s a problem, because just as these systems are more honest and helpful than they have ever been, they are also causing greater harm. And to name a real harm, already happening today, I offer the chief security officer of Amazon, CJ Moses, who had this to say about how generative AI is being used in efforts to disrupt critical infrastructure in an interview with the Wall Street Journal last month:

We’re seeing billions of attempts coming our way. On average, we’re seeing 750 million attempts per day. Previously, we’d see about 100 million hits per day, and that number has grown to 750 million over six or seven months.
This is the ongoing blind spot of the “AI is fake and sucks” crowd. This is the problem with telling people over and over again that it’s all a big bubble about to pop. They’re staring at the floor of AI’s current abilities, while each day the actual practitioners are successfully raising the ceiling.

If you spend a lot of time in Linux, returning to a Mac can have some surprising rough edges. For instance, MacOS’s max key repeat is just way too slow. Navigating a terminal with arrow keys is just, like, wow, stuck in tar. Anyone know a third party app on the Mac that can fix this?
