So... what's up with #DarkEnergy? 🤔 I wrote up a summary of the current status of possibly-weirdly-changing dark energy for @perimeterinstitute.bsky.social's shiny new researcher-focused newsletter; you can read the piece here:

A second genesis? A new study posits the transition from chemistry to biology happened more than once. LUCA (last universal common ancestor) was "almost" alive. Time + chemical changes at deep-sea vents allowed LUCA to give rise to bacteria & archaea separately. 🧪🦠 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

When Einstein developed general relativity the closest thing to a practical application that could even be imagined at the time was a slightly more precise description of where to look for the planet Mercury in the sky, and yet now we’d all be literally lost without it. Anyway: fund basic research.

Whoa 🤯 The Moon, in full eclipse, with the #Artemis II Orion spacecraft. Part of the Moon and spacecraft are lit by Earthshine, and both Saturn and Mars are visible to the lower right. Incredible. Details: images.nasa.gov/details/art0...
[alt text by NASA] The Moon, seen here backlit by the Sun during a solar eclipse on April 6, 2026, is photographed by one of the cameras on the Orion spacecraft’s solar array wings. Orion is visible in the foreground on the left. Earth is reflecting sunlight at the left edge of the Moon, which is slightly brighter than the rest of the disk. The bright spot visible just below the Moon’s bottom right edge is Saturn. Beyond that, the bright spot at the right edge of the image is Mars. Credit: NASA

At first glance this is very, very good news for NASA and other agencies. I think that many missions zeroed out by the White House decree are reversed here. Still a long way to go but this is an excellent sign. I'm sure many others will chime in on this.

And it is. Seen in new light, and in old, the nebula has a hold on us. We can't escape it. Regardless of what is going on here on Earth, the Pillars of Creation are still there, churning out new stars and building new worlds at the edge of our understanding.

So when JWST came online three years ago, it had to photograph the nebula too. Not just for reasons of science, but for the satisfaction of a collective humanity wanting to know that it's still there, still dazzling, still unspeakably vast.
