This site is peak web design to me. A team at squarespace worked with Luigi’s to “renew” the site recently (and I had nothing to do with it). But I think they nailed it, particularly on desktop. www.luigispizzabrooklyn.com

The 8hr course remains just $25 with the coupon, or you can pay whatever you want—even $0—by emailing me. In between jobs? In school? Whatever, I don’t need a reason. Hit that contact form and learn a bit about web components. 👊

Anyone notice a recent change with @netlify.com’s costs for static builds? The hourly 11ty builds (for weather forecast data fetches) that I’d been running for months without issue on their free plan now seem like they’ll use up all the credits of even the first two paid-tier plans in under a week?

I consider myself a person who knows a lot about CSS... but @miriam.codes' knowledge eclipses mine by ~10,000%. She brings an artistry to the discipline of authoring CSS and I'm sure anyone – whether newbie or old-timer like myself – can learn a lot from her course.

Like… :host { background: var(—bg, red) !important}
000
Scott Jehl @scottjehl.com · 11/06/2026
Yeah. Best I can think of is to set the :host property to an undefined css custom property, with a fallback of the value you want, still using !important. Then, at least the host’s inline style attribute is offered the final say (by setting the css custom property value)

Scott Jehl @scottjehl.com · 11/06/2026
Sounds like a “that’s how !important is meant to be used” example to me, even if :host is more of a gray area. @knowler.dev’s “a mental model for styling the shadow dom” made me feel right about this, in special cases

@jensimmons.bsky.social expanding on my reply last night, it'd be great to see this in Safari as it's long been very hard to communicate how to install a PWA for iOS users, even though it's been possible (yet obscure) for years. This element makes it so simple! + @nicolesullivan.bsky.social

still pondering how to display this new element from a design perspective but for now, there's a little progressive enhancement to show the button and text, or static instructions, based on a class added via a feature test: 'HTMLInstallElement' in window.
A screenshot of the footer of the website with an install button active: the text says, "I'm an app!" followed by a built-in install button. This is the supported use caseA second screenshot of the footer for browsers that don't support it. It says "i'm an app: save to your home screen", but does not have a button to do it for you

Scott Jehl @scottjehl.com · 04/06/2026
You can find out about how to use it and opt into the trial here developer.chrome.com/blog/install... Thanks to @patrickbrosset.com for help troubleshooting my implementation (...it turns out it won't work if you skew the button with css, which makes sense for a built in like this)

I decided to opt into the Origin Trial for the newly proposed <install> element, which is currently running in Chrome and Edge browsers, on my new local surf report web app dollarslice.nyc It's there in the footer (when my feature check reveals it). Would love to see this element supported on iOS!
