#skystorians and other academics - are you femme presenting and have you been involved in a PhD defense at a Finnish university? If so I would love to know what you wore! (I haven't had to do academic formal for >13yrs & purged all black from my wardrobe on discovering I was a navy/grey neutral 😬)

Top tip employers, don't announce "exciting new opportunities" on LinkedIn the same day as you tell other departments they're facing redundancies.

Ironically in the archives sector that’s a decent salary and a reasonable job spec.

Two years on and it’s still slightly incredible, but that’s my term as ARA chair complete. I have learned A Lot, and mostly enjoyed the experience! I will say that losing a parent and changing jobs twice during a term as chair is Not Ideal but everyone was incredibly supportive.

The RNLI have some of the best people in Britain volunteering for them. They put their lives on the line when they are called on and they will rescue anyone who needs them. Because every life matters, and offering help is the right thing to do. You can donate here: rnli.org

‘Squirrel’ and ‘girl’ rhyme but they both have two syllables and any other take is anti-Scottish discrimination.
Ludicrous. Likewise, some of those polled mistakenly pronounced "squirrel" as a single-syllable word to rhyme with "girl", instead of a two-syllable word that doesn't rhyme with anything.

A once in a lifetime opportunity to see an eclipse.
A sky that is mostly grey clouds. No visible signs of the sun, let alone an eclipse.
Plus side, lovely view of a green hilly island.

Today it is not raining on Iona.
Medieval Celtic cross standing against a blue sky and fluffy white clouds. Iona Abbey, a grey sandstone building against a blue sky. A path leading through grass and rocks to a bay beyond, with blue sea and blue skies. It’s beautiful.

100 years ago my granny was 21 and a freshly qualified new primary school teacher. I'd rather be given my grandfather's job, which was "inspector of the poor" (social work). I think the motorbike he had to get round was optional rather than part of the job though.

An unexpected morning in Venice. Instead of sleeper and trains, we’re now having to go to Verona to fly home otherwise we wouldn’t be back in time for work!

Slowly making our way up Italy by train, we’ve got 2.5 hours in Venice to get dinner before a sleeper train. Does anyone have any recommendations for decent places conveniently close to the station? (Extremely specific request, I know!)

The North is the A9 from Inverness to Wick. The North-West is everything west of that and above the Great Glen. The North-East is everything east of the Cairngorms and north of Dundee. These things can be debated. Manchester, Liverpool, Lake District, Newcastle? Don't waste our time. Southerners.

Today we’re going from Sicily to Salerno, which means we’re getting the train that goes on a boat! Starting in Milazzo this morning, with bonus pic of the Aeolian islands from Lipari from yesterday.

A travesty, and also I would point out that it would be better for everyone - better for the refugee, better for integration, cheaper for the state - if we just let refugees work.

The Palermo archaeology museum has turtles in their decorative pool!
Turtles! Some swimming in the pool, some just basking slightly above the water on a pile of rocks. Pool with a statue in the centre, in the middle of a courtyard.

Very much a UK archives post here, but: Given recent events, people really shouldn't send stuff to the archives mailing list with the title "for posting on the archives list" - my first thought was it was going to be bad and even though I'm no longer a list mod it was an instant stress response.
