The new nuclear doctrine being promoted by senior Pentagon officials aims to give the US President more "credible" (usable) nuclear options. But these neglect that escalation cannot be reliably controlled between adversaries, especially when nuclear weapons are involved.

What's worrying about the US / Saudi nuclear deal? The deal lacks key safeguards that would rule out the weaponisation of nuclear technology and materials. And there is historical precedent to show that US assistance of other country's nuclear power programmes has led to weapons proliferation...

Current and historical wars have proven that nuclear weapons have poor strategic value - the effects of their use are simply too catastrophic and incalculable. Could be obsolescence of nuclear weapons lead to their eventual elimination? Read more at ow.ly/szzE50ZQtfg

The system that underpins "deterrence" is the same one that sends false signals and miscalculates threat. Escalation risks are built into the nuclear system. That's why the world has come a hair's breadth from nuclear war since 1945 - and will continue to do so as long as nuclear weapons exist.

Last weekend, Kate Whitaker (Friends of the Earth Scotland) wrote in The National highlighting the connection between violent conflict, the climate crisis and energy crisis. We cannot address climate change while accepting the militaristic ideology that war is inevitable.

Is the US nuclear arsenal even a strategic asset? Writer Sina Azodi scrutinises the limited coercive leverage of nuclear weapons in current and historical conflicts involving nuclear-armed states. Far from preventing war, nuclear-armed states are most commonly military aggressors.

History shows us that nuclear weapons are no guarantee of security for the countries that possess them. Recent and ongoing wars show that the traditional norms of "deterrence" have broken down: Nuclear-armed states struggle to deter retaliation and aggression by their adversaries.

The £50bn+ permanent nuclear waste dump planned for Cumbria, without which industry figures doubt the sustainability of UK nuclear, was badged "unachievable" by the Treasury last year. The nuclear waste problem has been kicked down the road for decades. Future generations will bear the costs.

Currently, US submarine production operates at a rate of 1.2 per year. To meet commitments under AUKUS, that rate needs to double. US Under Secretary of Defence Elbridge Colby nevertheless argued that AUKUS was progressing at "full steam" while on a tour of south east Asia.

If the taboo on military nuclear use is broken, a disastrous precedent will be set that benefits no country. Nuclear war is not contained to national boundaries. It is a threat to humanity's collective existence. That's why "Never Again" is the only answer.

Australia's nuclear submarine ambitions could result in a legacy stockpile of weapons-grade uranium - fissile material that would require countless generations of safeguarding to prevent its use for nuclear weapons. Experts have warned about the proliferation risks of AUKUS.

Once again, the US risks nuclear proliferation in a volatile region. The US was inadvertently involved in proliferation when supplying heavy water for India's supposedly 'peaceful' plutonium-producing reactor which turned out to produce enough weapons-grade material for 2 bombs per year.

Japan's long-standing convention against nuclear weapons is codified in the 1967 "non-nuclear principles." Polling shows the principles retain majority support. The huge civic opposition to nuclear weapons in Japan is due to its history as the only country subjected to wartime nuclear weapons use.
