James was sorting trucks in the yard with newfound confidence thanks to Charlie and Stafford - now that he was putting a greater effort to take their advice to heart. Super Ed butted in and tried to rile James up again, but this time, James just ignored him.
Once she noticed, Charlie intervened, pressuring the Electro-Diesel about the coal trains. When he dismissed her, she fired back by commenting on his capabilities. The trucks joined her in teasing Super Ed, winding him up instead. James ended up sending him about his business, poking fun at his perceived lack of work experience compared to the red engine.
Gordon came in, commenting negatively about the end of the argument, only for Charlie to shut him up with a couple quips of her own. As the threat to the red engine's safety receded, Rebecca went to check on James. He was fighting back tears and shaking like a leaf in a storm. James told her about the fight, and his inability to stand up for himself. He recounted his recent flair-ups as well, wondering aloud what was wrong with him.
Rebecca recalled early into her life on the Southern Railway, how she'd combated negativity by acting unbothered. It hadn't been productive and had done little to neutralize the threat, so she'd tried a new approach - disarm their negativity with positivity of her own. She encouraged James not to do the same, but to not let Super Ed see that he was winding the red engine up. Not to 'get back' at him, but just to not let the Electro-Diesel bring him down to his level. It wouldn't be immediate, but a start was a start.
James also brought up a need he felt to measure up to the Big Engines - even her. Apparently, it had come from his time on the mainland - more specifically the railway he worked on before the LMS had formed.
Rebecca assured him that what that railway company did then did not define him now. No outside force did. Only he defined himself.

Rebecca heard James and Super Ed before she saw them. As she rushed to the source of the commotion, she saw the new Electro-Diesel slam into James, and send him hurtling down the siding. It looked like he was backing for another go.
She rushed in, all lamps shining and whistle blowing as loud as she could manage. She intercepted Super Ed and stood between him and James.
The two big engines stared each other down. Rebecca tried to get Super Ed to back off, only for him to bristle and challenge her. In the end, he slunk away, seething.
