I heard this explained as the potluck theory of free speech. Found the original post but not sure who the author is.

I was thinking of the "free exchange of ideas" last night. You know, it's not like a market, it's like a potluck. Everyone brings their own ideas and you sample others and some are familiar with a twist, some are interesting but not to your taste, some are bad, some are lifechanging. You can get into a discussion about recipes or technique, or what have you as people talk about the food.

If some brings mashed potatoes, you can debate the appropriateness for a potluck: is it too bland? Will it get cold on the table? Do potatoes make up too much of our diet?

But if someone puts a steaming platter of dog shit on the table, we're not going to debate it. And when we tell them to take it off the table, it's not because we are afraid of eating their dog shit or we think that it's going to revolutionize lunch but we don't want to allow that to happen.

We tell them to get it off the table because there is no debate to be had. It's dog shit. It's not an open question, it's not a matter of palettes or picky eaters.

That's why we don't engage with neo-nazis and white supremacists, and it's why we don't (or shouldn't) let them come to the potluck.

My hometown is on fire. I've heard from most of my folks there and so far none of their houses or businesses have been damaged, but many are still not cleared to return back home as all 4 of the active wildfires are uncontained.

I can vouch for both the student & the ineptitude of this supervisor, and if I weren't geographically too far away I'd be telling this administrator in person how infuriating it is to put a student's housing in jeopardy because something fell off your to-do list. 😤

There isn't really a point to this, except that I have been so blessed to accompany this family and several others in planning services that were meaningful as they grieve these unimaginable losses. ... and there's a lot for me to reflect on in these moments- is this something I can do more of?

I was honored to be asked to coordinate the music for his service, and assist his family in choosing the elements of the Catholic mass that best honored his life and his beautiful spirit. His funeral was last Saturday and I just received the video from his mom.

According to his mom, that trip transformed his life. After graduation, he attended law school and subsequently passed the bar on his first try. He rejected a good paying job in our hometown, choosing instead to become a public defender for youth.

On June 14th, the son of a family friend died unexpectedly following a brief illness. He was 26. My mom had taught him and his younger brother, and both boys had visited our church's sister community in El Salvador- where I lived for nine months.

My hometown movie theater has been doing RHPS midnight showings for decades, and there's one tomorrow night after the Pride parade & festival tomorrow. In trying to explain the phenomenon to my stepkiddo, I found this ancient relic of me at a summer showing in 2007. Not sure when/how I got old.
