If we don't have the product's specs (design specifications), we must do our best to determine the preferences based on what we can see was done most often on the proof pages.

Style guides are for manuscripts, not product design. — A very common error among proofreading students is thinking that the style guide dictates how designed pages should look.

And the readings I have seen each began with a content warning; they were too much for me to read more than a skim. Even just reading 22 pages of abuse of little children who were taken by our government is a lot.

That's after I graduated university! Today the mandatory Ont. Gr 11 English curriculum centres on the abusive colonial oppression of the original cultures and peoples of this land. (I hope it goes on to celebrate those original cultures too, over the next 3 months of the course.)

Every lecture of mine does begin with a land acknowledgment. Since I teach online, a different student reads their local acknowledgment each time we meet. This week I talked about Truth and Reconciliation Day instead. 1996 was the closing of the last residential school. Nineteen ninety-six!

Since leaving school, I haven't sung the national anthem more than once (since I do not attend sports). My friend now in Gr 11 was surprised by this — and I was surprised how important teachers make the anthem, considering it is absent from the other 9/10ths of life.

Why do we need a National Day for Truth & Reconciliation? Because the top of the government page about it carries a content warning & link to mental health support. If the history of what England & Canada did to your family and culture carries a mental health warning, we should be talking about it!

Searching newspapers showed the same preference for TOQUE (over TUQUE) in 6. The National Post 7. The Toronto Star  With about an even split in The Globe and Mail Have you, yourself, found the tuque spelling preferred in any Canadian resources?

🤯 Do they just not know how many professional standards they are missing? I'm hearing new "proofreaders" say they can't imagine proofreading without AI. There is so much that the LLMs can't do, and 99.94%* of proofreading is about design, sense & legal issues that an LLM can't "see." *I calculated!

I appreciate your point & see it is absent from the city tourism site. Like most organizers, Downtown Kingston (purely a district retailers' group) only advertises their events. In 2025 the poker run was on the city/hospitality groups' tourism website. Event info in YGK is absurdley fragmented.
