However in the interesting objects found in the basement category this one is the bomb.
This picture is of a dummy mortar. Just under a foot long, and weighing a bunch it is a teardrop shaped chunk of steel, normally launched by a small charge that fits up into the seven fins tail which screws off.

I know no one has (very few do) money, but a club I used to attend (503C I think?) had a fire, and is fundraising to renovate. Hundreds of thousands of people have met to dance, meet and talk, and develop years long relationships there. What we used to call socialize. www.denverturnverein.com

I found out recently that my local university has a Meritus Scholarship program which allows you to audit classes for free. (with several restrictions) I looked into it and you do get a .edu email address, which is usually all it takes to get student discounts on hardware and software!

Another artifact from the basement. It’s a promotional set of records to help you learn French. Bob was a newspaper man up in Longmont years ago. I also worked briefly for The Rocky Mountain News before it was destroyed by rapacious greed and the consolidation of journalism across the board

I’ve been out on an FMLA leave taking care of my partner all this month. So I’ve had even less time than usual to post anything. Plus I’m quiet (mostly) anyway. But I’ve learned a lot, taking care of almost all the cooking, laundry, shopping, cleaning etc.

I gotta say again that if possible, you should question each and every insurance claim or medical bill! I could have paid the $134.40 but I called and hung out on the phone or on hold for a full hour! However I do not have to pay the $134 and I will get a $50 refund as well. Painful but worth it.

Also this old box. It dates to the early sixties. A promotional item from Domino Sugar. Something gleams inside. We’re on an orange shag carpet, also from the 70’s.
It is a funky old box and has a shipping label on it. It’s addressed to Hazel Mahan who we know moved from the address here in ‘66.

I was going through the basement and found this artifact from the ancient past.
It’s a “Slicing Knife” (as though there were non-slicing knives)
This one is “the newest gift idea” as it is electric. Made by General Electric it probably dates to the early 70’s if not the late to mid 60’s
It comes in a box with the motorized handle, the serrated blades which move antagonistically against each other fucking the hell up anything in their path. Think of a softer, smoother chainsaw designed solely to cut into human flesh. And also beef, poultry , vegetables , fish, breads, cakes , fruits, and cheeses.

A carving fork sits, unopened, in its plastic wrap.
The entire mess is on an orange shag carpet, also from the 70’s.

Personally I don’t think it’s up for cheese as it would bind, clog, and stop working. And I question what fruits and vegetables would be large enough to bother with. And fish! This thing is designed for a turkey or large roast one of those big tuna I suppose… but if you tried to French cut a green bean you’d probably lose a leg. The balance of the device and cumbersome workings make this one a real nightmare

@erniebufflo.bsky.social And (as I understand it) the organization of the assembly works is similar to the way our US democracy was described to us as children. But for real. This will happen from the ground up, but it will happen. Presbyterians are not “top down” as the RC is (when the SSPX obey)

I had a lovely convo today. I’m the customer, making chit-chat with the person helping. The subject veered off a bit and I said “never discuss religion or politics” which is maybe an American saying? Anyway he replied saying something about God. Not sure exactly what.

This is unrelated to my earlier post.
A roasted chicken. The near (left) wind has several pin feathers visible. There’s some carrots in the juices and underneath some onions and leeks not visible. It’s resting in a schlemmertopf on an old electric stovetop

My personal default breakfast is cottage cheese with whatever fruit is in season and cheap. I intersperse it with porridge and maybe an air fried hashbrown and turkey sausage if I am feeling indulgent.

I’m a Dad!! I have a little moss terrarium. There was some brown stuff in there and I thought maybe an isopod could clean up some of the dead stuff. I put only one animal in there… not sure if this change might be good or ill.
A moss farm in a brandy snifter. This is several pillow moss growing together. It looks a little brown on one side. There’s a not moss plant in there too.
The snifter is on a speaker cabinet, and there’s a towel on the floor and a lamp and some books in the background.

Things are looking up! Down south of town, fifth floor picture window. This is taken nearly straight up oblique against the glass. Standard iPhone shot, no edits.
This is an image of a sunny day in Colorado. We see a blue sky, the sun shining, specular rays pointing out the clouds. Artifacts in the upper right lend a wash of mystery to the scene. It could be anywhere.

If the Hubble telescope were here on earth, maybe this is how it would see our star

On a more positive note… it’s early morning tomorrow in Tokyo.
Orange street in Tokyo.
A night scene.
The pavement is painted orange, it is raining lightly, the pavement reflects the light from shop windows and cars. A couple is ready to cross. A parked car faces us. The shops are all closed. We can see several blocks down the canyon created by tall buildings.
The air is chilly, it was warm earlier but the rain has cooled the night air.
It’s time to head back to the hotel now (why do I keep saying, “home”?) to try to sleep. My hours are all wrong.
It’s 11:00 pm now, and I’ll wake again at 4:00 am and nothing will be open.
When the sun comes up I’ll go out and watch a man wiping the rain from the seats in the park. I may or may not be able to find my way to the coffee shop where they use a vacuum device to make delicious coffee. “Strong and to go!” I say, making little walking legs with my fingers. They don’t mind that I don’t speak Japanese.
The woman stirs the sugar in for what seems like forever. Slow circles first one way, and then the other. She hands me the cup and I walk on…
The post office is still closed. ¥140 to send international. I already have the stamp and letter written but I don’t know where it goes.
I should have sent one to myself, to see the postmark. I could write a letter and never open it. time stops

So the new person at work enjoys or bathes in Febreeze(™️). First time meeting, I noticed but wasn’t strongly affected. Made the mistake to go into his empty office and confirm the lingering stink. Had to double up my inhaler and let boss know I’d be working from home until further notice.

We met this nice older woman who was very friendly and spoke to us directly. (Crows are bad luck, she said, although I don’t agree with her) But she also brought out a brochure from her purse entitled “Welcoming Foreigners”
We had a brief (but limited) conversation. She asked us if we knew why Japanese people are so punctual. Apparently the answer is, “The JR”! Japan Railway is the modern, “they make the trains run on time.” Their response to the militarism of their past is fascinating.

As a complete aside, the most recent cohort of graduates have a 98% rate of finding employment after leaving university. I don’t know the level of overall unemployment but I think it is probably higher than in the United States.
