Do not get me wrong I strongly support light rail and mass transit but to be fair it’s been a few minutes since the train passed by my stop… I don’t know how many months…
The Colfax light rail station at Auraria. It closed prior to the construction and will probably not open until the new building has been completed.
An image of the torn up rails. They had to be replaced after about a thirty years because steel, y’know degrades. I think it doesn’t work well in cold environments.

However in the interesting objects found in the basement category this one is the bomb.
This picture is of a dummy mortar. Just under a foot long, and weighing a bunch it is a teardrop shaped chunk of steel, normally launched by a small charge that fits up into the seven fins tail which screws off.

Inside is a set of four cake pans, graduated in size. I’m guessing 9, 7, 5, and 3 inches. This really makes me want to bake a cake!
Inside the box is an unused (hazel was like that) set of four cake pans, graduated in size. I’m guessing 9, 7, 5, and 3 inches. That three inch cake is going to burn before the normal sized nine inch gets set!
I do really want to get back to baking! Great idea in this near 100° F heat!! On the other hand who doesn’t love a wedding cake? I mean icing! This thing could carry a lot of icing. And Jam! Different flavors! Powdered sugar! Piping!
Gah!!!

Also this old box. It dates to the early sixties. A promotional item from Domino Sugar. Something gleams inside. We’re on an orange shag carpet, also from the 70’s.
It is a funky old box and has a shipping label on it. It’s addressed to Hazel Mahan who we know moved from the address here in ‘66.

I was going through the basement and found this artifact from the ancient past.
It’s a “Slicing Knife” (as though there were non-slicing knives)
This one is “the newest gift idea” as it is electric. Made by General Electric it probably dates to the early 70’s if not the late to mid 60’s
It comes in a box with the motorized handle, the serrated blades which move antagonistically against each other fucking the hell up anything in their path. Think of a softer, smoother chainsaw designed solely to cut into human flesh. And also beef, poultry , vegetables , fish, breads, cakes , fruits, and cheeses.

A carving fork sits, unopened, in its plastic wrap.
The entire mess is on an orange shag carpet, also from the 70’s.

Personally I don’t think it’s up for cheese as it would bind, clog, and stop working. And I question what fruits and vegetables would be large enough to bother with. And fish! This thing is designed for a turkey or large roast one of those big tuna I suppose… but if you tried to French cut a green bean you’d probably lose a leg. The balance of the device and cumbersome workings make this one a real nightmare

I bought one of these. There are some real drawbacks but the run time is impressive. And the cold is intense.

Sorry about the lousy contrast.
This is not my art. My good friend Jeff Cook drew this during Reagan’s time in office. Another cartoon showed him (Bonzo) driving a car, a completely wrecked smoking junk heap, labeled “the American economy” into a tree, rock, (or something similar) with caption, “this could be a sign of trouble ahead!”
Probably right around the time he raised taxes, contradicting his pledge never to do so.
And don’t get me started on the feckless response to the bombing of the marine corps barracks in Beirut.
Or, holy fuck, his response to the AIDS crisis and the way he turned his back on Rock Hudson.
AND the first American President who was divorced! In fact he was the only divorced president until…

Completely off topic, but Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck was not just an older grumpy looking guy. He had his “hotty” phase as a young man.

He was advised not to go into theoretical physics, since the physical universe had already been completely discovered.

A woman I follow posted this.
A story from twitter. Sherri Turner posts. I added alt.
“I look at my mom‘s old house on Google maps Street view, the house where I grew up. It says “image captured May 2009“. there is a light on in her bedroom. It is still her house, she is still alive, I am visiting every few months on the train to Bowman Parkway.
Her little pink car will still be in the garage, but I will have taken a taxi from the station, and when it arrives, she will be standing in the doorway, smiling, and waving, some more smaller than the last time I saw her. We will play Scrabble and watch tipping point and”There will have been no pandemic, no other deaths, no as-yet-undiscovered illnesses. And I won’t know how perfect it is, and I wouldn’t go back and say, even if I could, because sometimes it’s best not to know. I take a screen print of the house with the light on, because it won’t last forever, and one day the google van will go back down that street and replace her house with someone else’s. and though there mmight be a light on in the window, it won’t be her.

If you look closely there are five animals in frame.
It’s a terrarium with a little isopod in there. This one moved away from the glass towards the interior. The yellow globs are going to be crawling around soon. Here she is, a new creature resting after momma’s let go of another one.

They are interesting from the underside too.
It’s a terrarium with a little isopod in there. This one from the underside. Notice anything in frame? It’s a closeup of a terrarium with a little isopod in there. This one is ultra little. The gentle forest of moss behind this tiny animal, walking along the inside of the glass, shows how small, and each individual plant all bonded together…Frickin’ ultra micro animal. That frond can’t be distinguished from any other at arm’s length.

I’m a Dad!! I have a little moss terrarium. There was some brown stuff in there and I thought maybe an isopod could clean up some of the dead stuff. I put only one animal in there… not sure if this change might be good or ill.
A moss farm in a brandy snifter. This is several pillow moss growing together. It looks a little brown on one side. There’s a not moss plant in there too.
The snifter is on a speaker cabinet, and there’s a towel on the floor and a lamp and some books in the background.

Sounds like a job for…
A vial of cyanocobalamin 1,00 mcg. It stands in front of the prescription bottle indicating it is to be injected “under the skin” once each w eek.
As an aside, this was prescribed, and approved by insurance, and filled. However the _syringes_ were _not_ approved by insurance and needed to be purchased at cash price. (Which was nothing for us, as we are frequent fliers and are well known to the staff of our most wonderful pharmacy!)

Things are looking up! Down south of town, fifth floor picture window. This is taken nearly straight up oblique against the glass. Standard iPhone shot, no edits.
This is an image of a sunny day in Colorado. We see a blue sky, the sun shining, specular rays pointing out the clouds. Artifacts in the upper right lend a wash of mystery to the scene. It could be anywhere.

The Capital dome and cathedral spires. The cathedral was once struck by lightning! A shop owner from across the street had dashed over and grabbed some of the debris. Personally. I blame the archbishop, who was a complete ass!

On a more positive note… it’s early morning tomorrow in Tokyo.
Orange street in Tokyo.
A night scene.
The pavement is painted orange, it is raining lightly, the pavement reflects the light from shop windows and cars. A couple is ready to cross. A parked car faces us. The shops are all closed. We can see several blocks down the canyon created by tall buildings.
The air is chilly, it was warm earlier but the rain has cooled the night air.
It’s time to head back to the hotel now (why do I keep saying, “home”?) to try to sleep. My hours are all wrong.
It’s 11:00 pm now, and I’ll wake again at 4:00 am and nothing will be open.
When the sun comes up I’ll go out and watch a man wiping the rain from the seats in the park. I may or may not be able to find my way to the coffee shop where they use a vacuum device to make delicious coffee. “Strong and to go!” I say, making little walking legs with my fingers. They don’t mind that I don’t speak Japanese.
The woman stirs the sugar in for what seems like forever. Slow circles first one way, and then the other. She hands me the cup and I walk on…
The post office is still closed. ¥140 to send international. I already have the stamp and letter written but I don’t know where it goes.
I should have sent one to myself, to see the postmark. I could write a letter and never open it. time stops

We met this nice older woman who was very friendly and spoke to us directly. (Crows are bad luck, she said, although I don’t agree with her) But she also brought out a brochure from her purse entitled “Welcoming Foreigners”
We had a brief (but limited) conversation. She asked us if we knew why Japanese people are so punctual. Apparently the answer is, “The JR”! Japan Railway is the modern, “they make the trains run on time.” Their response to the militarism of their past is fascinating.

As a complete aside, the most recent cohort of graduates have a 98% rate of finding employment after leaving university. I don’t know the level of overall unemployment but I think it is probably higher than in the United States.
