Today’s artist without a (known) birthday: Jean Hey, aka the Master of Moulins. Here, Madeleine of Burgundy, who’s not looking all that pleased to be presented by Mary Magdalene in 1490.

'A Man with a Scythe, Mowing,' was painted by Harry Becker in Wenhaston, Suffolk around 1913. For the next 15 years, Becker observed the slow turn of the agricultural year to emerge as one of the most remarkable interpreters of the English countryside.

This painting was a result of Francis Cadell being turned down to join the British army in 1914. He worked on a farm in Dumfries, Scotland (depicted here) in an attempt to improve his fitness - he later passed the medical board's examination and joined the Royal Scot's Guards.

On the penultimate day of our landscape themed week here's "Litlington, Sussex" by Lilian Leahy along with her preparatory sketch for the view. Both date from 1934. As you'll see from the modern day photo, Lilian would still be able to recognise the scene that she painted. #LilianLeahy

Saint Jerome removes a thorn from the paw of a very heraldic lion, in an incredibly bleak landscape (although there are neighbors!). From predella of Pistoia Trinity Altarpiece, 1460, by Filippo Lippi.

In the 'The Lustre Bowl,' (1908) William Nicholson plays with the shining contrast of the bowl against a dark black background. He would set up a still life and leave it untouched for days, absorbing every element. The flash of light lifts the picture out of the ordinary.
