A common theme that drives me absolutely wild with elections/polling these days: 1. Right wing wrecks everything 2. Left of centre figure elected 3. Left of centre can’t fix all the damage in 5 seconds so the right wing, who have got 10x worse in the meantime, lead polls again/win next election

I think it should be a source of deep embarrassment – and perhaps even shame – that Rishi Sunak has spoken out on this before Andy Burnham has.

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

I think we're at the point where we can incredibly comfortably say that your attitude towards Reform, Restore, MAGA, the AfD etc is how you'd have responded to fascism in the 1930s

The flagbearing party of the nativist right ends its conference bruised by fresh revelations about corruption... ...And organised groups of blackshirts march through the streets, pushing irregular arrivals back onto the front pages. An ecosystem in action, pursuing a time-tested salience strategy.

Response from Burnham will be important. These are actual fascists. They must be treated as such. Not 'concerned citizens'.

And if the powers of the EC or the rules governing donations/ electoral conduct are insufficient (in this case this is just straightforwardly not the case) - the Representation of the People Bill is literally in front of Parliament right now *waves at all the low hanging fruit*

Yes, of course, there are processes and impartiality matters. But impartiality is not a get out of jail card. The EC, like all other public bodies, has a responsibility to build trust both in itself and the rules it enforces, by showing that it is or can be effective at defending the public good.

A race-science enthusiast was filmed in a private members' club boasting to a donor that the EC will not do anything about breaches of the law. The EC not waking up this morning with a strong response is a pretty significant dereliction of duty.

This is why I find the whole ‘oh yes we need to show the public migration is handed control’ stuff from labour so stupid as well as immoral. The public at large isn’t basing their concerns on evidence or migration rates! How much clearer can we see this

I'm old enough to remember when Labour lost the 2023 by-election in Uxbridge by 495 votes and the leadership decided that meant Sadiq Khan needed to rethink whether or not cleaning up the literal air was a good idea. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

Indeed. SS embodies the whole sorry mess, in that hardly anyone in it ever saw Arday as a person. For Cambridge he was a way to buff their credentials, to be discarded when he became embarrassing. For Sodha he was a prop to air grievances about “gender ideology”.

I know the air conditioning debate is polarising but I've been working part-time while on holiday and my 3 hours of work per day (in an air conditioned flat) have been more productive than *entire weeks* in my overheating home in London for the past few months.

You can't bring down the cost of living if farm yields are hit by drought. You can't improve the quality of people's lives if their bodies boil at work. A new govt with a polling bump during record-breaking heat is the best chance we've had for a while for a leader to settle this once and for all.

I was at a meeting recently about the politics of "Gen Z". One of the contributors had some serious concerns about banning the under 16 digital ban and suggested that society/ politics would be better safeguarded by banning the over 60s from using social media. I can't stop thinking about this.

Grownups: "People need to see a balance between long-term reforms and immediate, tangible changes" Also Grownups: "MAKING BUSES AND ELECTRICITY A BIT CHEAPER IS THAT ALL YOU CAN DO" I'm sure I'll find many reasons to be critical soon but there's real cognitive dissonance/ bad faith at work here.

This just strikes me as such a good way to build long-term campaigning capacity. The DSA, the Bloc (RIP) and other groups prioritise building long-term infrastructure for communities but it's rare to actually see a candidate consciously do this in a Global North context.

One of the biggest misunderstandings of politics in our time is that the Left has become all about identity politics. The opposite is the case. The Left has (nearly everywhere) completely given up on shaping, representing, and mobilizing identities. Instead, the far right has successfully done it.

Consequences for Farage are objectively a good thing. But if you need proof that we won't get far by going after only the most visible parts of an ecosystem, consider this: The *Labour party* is unable to decide whether a strong commitment to net-zero is disqualifying for the role of Chancellor.

A backbencher recently told me they were worried that swathes of the PLP would see Burnham's coronation as enough *on its own* to change the party's fortunes, to "change the vibes a bit" without a substantively different policy offer. The new govt has less time than it thinks to prove this wrong.
