Either she was going to start laughing hysterically or throw up.

This final book is now my favourite in the trilogy. It blends a psychological deep dive into a troubled marriage with a war story seen through the eyes of previously devoted soldiers as their illusions about their respective causes and leaders crumble. Although I tend to skim over battle scenes to get to more interesting parts, here I read them all, impressed with how gut-wrenching and poignant Thea made them."

"As spouses, Talasyn and Alaric are doing their best, but their best might not be enough in the face of opposing goals, political machinations, and their own sorely lacking knowledge of how to make a marriage work. I particularly enjoyed the symbolism of two small plot lines – the chipped vulana stone reflecting the state of their relationship and the caged sariman’s fate as a parallel to Talasyn’s. "

"Another theme woven throughout the story is family and its influence on our main characters. Alaric is finally forced to face his family’s legacy, how his upbringing almost destroyed him as a person, and what that means for him after the war. This new understanding of herself and her aethermancy gives her the strength she needs for a long overdue reckoning with the past and the future of the Nenavarian royal family."

"From book one, Alaric has been on a slow-burn redemption/healing arc, but in This Shattered Tempest we get to see Talasyn dip her toes in a corruption arc in turn. She rages. She craves power. She wants retribution for injustice, old and new. And still, she chooses mercy whenever she can. This, to me, makes her such a compelling character. She’s a good person not because she never wants to do anything selfish or violent, but because she chooses not to.

This Shattered Tempest is a satisfying final book in a beautiful trilogy, giving the main characters the ending they deserve and lovingly tying the subplots that crop up throughout the story. Even the sariman gets a rewarding resolution! I’m impatiently waiting for the release so everyone will be able to read this and we can scream about it together. I’ll bring the popcorn, you bring the tissues – we’re going to need them."
