Beware! Lit world is full of AI scams right now. We’ve received word that someone is impersonating at least one of our editors in cold emails to writers. If you ever have a question about if you’re talking to a Noemi editor, please reach out on social media or email sales@noemipress.org

One of the best ways you can keep our work going is to become a recurring donor. Even $5/month helps us pay an additional post-publication award submission fee for one of our authors. We’d be honored to count you among our supporters! Visit www.noemipress.org to donate today.

Small, independent presses like Noemi are able to publish vital work that challenges the status quo because we’re supported by our community. We were recently able to change our donation platform, ensuring every dollar donated stays with us (not giving big tech portions of your donation in fees!).

Beyond the trope of a siren temptress, the mermaid speaker of the poem wrestles with longing, fundamentally curious about the object of her affection.

Here’s what I wrote about Kim’s poem: ‘Nixentanz,’ which translates to ‘Mermaid’s Dance’ from German, captures the beauty and danger inherent in mermaid folklore. One of my favorite aspects of Stoll’s writing is the way the natural world is lush but also tinged with danger.

Borjas’s speaker desires and knows the danger of desire’s excesses. The natural world is recovering while the people and relationships of this poem are stuck in tension between abundance and scarcity.

How do we eulogize the dead when the dead don’t deserve it? Morris Lakes compacts huge emotion in such a small space, rejecting elision of the fullest, messiest truth about a tragedy.

The speaker weaves in and out of family stories, but it’s in the shared observation of the pregnant swimming mule deer that she knits them together. ‘Do you need a body to protect another?’ is a question I’ll be returning to time and time again.
