I like her most tho cos she was a good hater. She really disliked Tony Benn & George Galloway 😅. She used to joke that her memoirs would be called "Shits I Have Known" and once teased Roy Hattersley: "There are two chapters on you." Class.

Janey's home in Partick was crammed with books, political pamphlets (some dating from the 17th century) & records. She loved music & helped musicians like Archie & Ray Fisher, Euan MacColl, Martin Carthy, Jeannie Robertson, Jimmy McBeath & Woody Guthrie's sidekick Cisco Houston.

A huge anti-apartheid campaigner, she gifted toys fashioned by Mandela to Nuremberg's international toy museum. Mandela had created similar toys from scrap during his 27-year incarceration on Robben Island & he made these with Soweto pupils' help after his release. Aww. /2

The new statue of Nelson Mandela is going up today in Glasgow. I'm excited to see it. But let's also remember Mandela's great friend, Glasgow MEP Janey Buchan who campaigned for his release. Janey was a legend. She started out communist but switched to Labour in the 50s. /1

When farms stop yielding, hunger does not knock — it breaks the door. Across the Horn of Africa, soils that once fed nations are turning barren. This is not “bad weather.” This is climate change rewriting our food systems in real time.

As an antidote to the poison being thrown at the RNLI, I give you Bill Bryson:
“I had never really stopped to consider what an extraordinary
thing the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is. Think about
it. A troubled ship calls for help, and eight people — teachers,
plumbers, the guy who runs the pub — drop everything and put
to sea, whatever the weather, asking no questions, imperilling
their own lives, to try to help strangers. Is there anything more
brave and noble than that?”
