“And nothing at all to do with the fact that you’re smitten with our charming doctor?”
The coffee went down the wrong way. Kallista spluttered, turning her head away to cough. When she finally gathered herself, Iona was smirking away in another direction. “You really think so?”
“Oh, I’m pretty certain of it. I’ve never seen you so distracted as I have these past few days.” Iona glanced over again, her eyes kind.
Kallista gazed down in her mug to avoid the understanding look from her First Mate. For some reason, kindness stung worse than derision. “All the better we return her to the Spetses then. We have too much to do. Already I’ve let my tryst with her get in the way of our vital work around the Isles.”
“Kalli,” Iona chided, “as your friend, rather than your subordinate, can I just say... maybe cut yourself some slack for once? You’re only human.”
Kallista continued to avoid meeting her eyes, and swigged down the last of her coffee. “Sadly, I don’t think we’re in a position to afford me that luxury. Come on, let’s get ready for our arrival.”
