I don't draw much at all anymore, but when my wife asked for me to draw an animal for her wall at work, I knew it had to be #punch 20 years ago this would have turned out amazing, but still, it was fun to scribble on paper again.

When I was 12 years old, I wrote to @stephenking.bsky.social telling him that I wanted to be a writer just like him. I didn't become a novelist, but I do horrify readers with medical history. Every time I write a book, I send him a copy hoping, as I did as a child, that he may someday see it.

Well, unless I get 1,604 page reads by tomorrow, I won't hit the 100,000 KENP milestone for my first year as a published author. But that's ok. 98k page reads are more than I thought I'd get when Sorrow Draw debuted. If you're one of those readers, thank you for taking a chance on an indie debut!

The #WIPSnips word for March 6 is "reputation" In this scene, Barsam has just emerged from his cursed exile (trapped in an amulet - he gets ten days of freedom every five years) and is chatting with his friend and former captain, Warren. #WriteSky #AmWriting #WritingCommunity
Barsam smiled again. A soft, sad smile. "It went well, I think. We have an understanding, Jakk and I. Em is understandably lonely. She is a goblin and has her needs. I knew very well what that meant when we met. I never fancied Em to be mine and mine alone. To be honest, I'm surprised—and somewhat flattered—that she still is. Goblins are notorious in their…appetites. Still, she has assured me that she intends to remain faithful, as arduous and unnecessary as that is. Jakk is understandably heartbroken, but he's accepted it gracefully."
"Gracefully?" Warren asked. His mammoth friend's reputation for jealousy had been something of a legend in his time as Captain of the Black Isle Company. They had all known him to be a jealous leader, a jealous lover, and a jealous friend.
Barsam laughed. "Of course." He sat back down on the cold stone bench. "You might not notice the change in a man when you are so close to him. You see him every day, and change comes slow. It is imperceptible from one day to the next. Like a child growing up, it doesn't happen all at once but in a thousand small and indiscernible ways over the months and seasons and years. I, on the other hand, have seen five years of change in an instant."

So the first two Amazon reviews for my latest book are good examples of how fickle genre expectations are, and how you can't please every reader. The first says there are too many tense scenes for a cozy. The second says there aren't enough action scenes and it leans too heavily on the "cozy" side.

The #WIPSnips word for March 4 is "annoy" An excerpt from Sorrow Draw. Which is technically no longer a WIP, I suppose. Hasn't been for almost a year, I guess. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Erasmus cursed himself silently. His laughter brought them here. “My father shouldn’t concern himself with my comings and goings. And neither should his goons. I’m no child to be fretted over.”
Ransom pulled down the dust scarf that covered his face. “What was you two doing in the parsonage?”
“I was showing my friend here the spot where the old minister died. You know, the one that shit himself to death in this very house. A tragic tale. The mood was so somber afterward I attempted to bring in a little levity with some jokes and laughter.” Erasmus feigned annoyance, but his heart threatened to beat out of his chest. This is just what the Paluxy Boys would use to justify hanging Lupe.
Why wasn’t I more cautious?
Ransom smacked his lips. “You know what they say about you, don’t you? I mean, you have to know. And yet you still put yourself in this position. Doesn’t the Bible tell us to abstain from the appearance of evil? Yet here you are, decidedly not abstaining from a goddamned thing.”

Happy Monday! The #WIPSnips word for March 3rd is "ring" I feel like I cheated with this one, but nowhere in my draft did the word "ring" appear in its own. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
His lamp bounced in the wind and with each careful step his horse took. Though it did little to pierce the veiling dust, the light was a source of comfort to him in the darkness of the wastes. He rubbed the glass lenses of his goggles with a corner of his keffiyeh, but it did little to help his vision. The fog of Calamity grew thicker than usual tonight, and it made finding the cairns difficult. Conny feared, more than once, that his horse might drift on the trail, and he would be lost on the wastelands, wandering directionless until thirst devoured him.
Yet every time this fear became a burning, consuming thing, he would see the shadow of the next cairn behind the obscuring dust, and he would be safe again for a time.
He chided himself for his childishness. Had he not wandered these wastelands for months, tracking a single girl through the endless dust? Yes, he told himself. But I didn't do any of it alone.

The #WIPSnips word for February 21 is "whim" Wu can sometimes make up things on a whim. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Farhad said nothing. Wu disliked her people, and their beliefs, and she would often make up her own beliefs, almost on a whim, usually to be contrary. To everyone Farhad had ever known, crows were a sign of trouble.
“Come my love,” Wu said. She held him in her gaze with her narrow eyes that Farhad found intoxicating. “He is alright, too. He is alright, too.”
But this bloody trail and the hoof prints in the dust didn’t tell the full story. He might have been alive when he left the battle, but did he make it the long way back through the woods and to the safety of the lodge? And what was the fate of Crowkiller? The big Indian had always been almost as close a friend to him as Conny.

“Nonsense. You’re the only reason that all these men and women who ain’t dead yet, ain’t dead yet. Even with your bum leg, you outgunned all of us.”
“I sat at a window and shot at men from a hiding spot like a coward.” Years ago, he would have stood up to any man that hid in the shadows and killed men from the cover of darkness and called him out for being yellow.
“A coward? What them men did was cowardly. They came here and shot up a bunch of innocent people who was only minding they own. What you did was the noble thing. Coward my ass, Cornelius White.”
“Well ain’t you a daisy for saying so,” he said. “How’s it looking? The leg, I mean.”
