It's important to him because he's a white supremacist, which is the same reason he avoids mentioning the Nazis or Confederates when he lists the foes America has defeated. My guess is at least one of his speechwriters believes the wrong side lost in WW2, if Hegseth doesn't.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Well, happy Charles Darwin is “very poorly today & very stupid & hate[s] everybody & everything” to all who celebrate, because he wrote those words in a letter to his friend (and author of Principles of Geology) Charles Lyell 161 years ago today

Once heard a Dem natsec person talk about how they didn’t want Congress to get involved in a civil liberties/surveillance issue. They weren’t talking about Republicans.

i don’t think so. it’s unestablished and controversial whether any of them use language that has all the features of human language

we haven’t only applied that word to humans. it’s well established semantically and empirically that animals talk, think and understand. it is not well established either semantically or empirically as to inanimate objects or computational code. so the analogy lacks persuasiveness

calculators, smart phones, Siri, Alexa, computers, etc, all do it. just not as advanced or exciting. i don’t see any reason to use those words for LLMs that wouldn’t apply equally to these other things

this is what i mean about “sex-based” rights being a trojan horse for the abdication of human rights. stop making people get naked where they don’t want to and the problem goes away. let every kid participate who wants to, divided up whatever way makes that work best, and the problem goes away

i thought her early stuff was too “not like the other girls” and didn’t enjoy her particularly until a lot more recently. her newer stuff has mature reflections of what it’s like to be a woman of a certain age, looking down the road at being past her prime

i would have thought it widely agreed that only self-aware entities with experiences do these things. the idiosyncratic use is to apply them outside that context, which i’ve never encountered prior to this

Look, let's clear this up. LLMs can't think or understand because those are evolved capabilities of embodied living organisms embedded in the physical and social world and LLMs aren't that. Don't make it harder than it is.

Yes. I think the consensus among US elite pundits and senior politicians that the way to protect liberal democracy is *not* to punish elite figures who violate its rules is wrong. A norm starting at least with the Watergate pardon. The opposite is true. You need to enforce the law and Constitution.

Once again, one of the primary reasons we have arrived at this point (completely out-of-control & unconstitutional abuse of executive power to conduct wildly illegal foreign policy) is that no one, including the most senior people involved, went to jail for the rest of their lives for Iran-Contra.

So, Banksy bought a used yacht, repaired it and retrofitted it to serve as a rescue boat to save migrants in the central Mediterranean. The whole project cost the artist $860,000. Since 2020, the boat has saved more than 3,800 people. londondaily.com/banksy-funds...

It never occurs to conservatives that we should create bathrooms that actually preserve privacy at somewhat greater expense. Half of this debate is because they build gang showers like it's the military for schools.

in fact i’m pretty strongly insistent we should use words that accurately describe what they’re doing (ie their “behavior”)
010
maximally entangled sarah @sarahnemy.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
i’ve already had these exchanges with it. in all instances it has been careful to say we cannot fully foreclose the possibility of self awareness (especially in powerful new models moving forward), only that currently there is no evidence of that. which is also my own independent assessment as well
010
maximally entangled sarah @sarahnemy.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
i’m pretty sure i didn’t say anything like that. i don’t even know what it would mean. “computing” and “assessing” are both behaviors

Birth of a Nation was highly controversial at the time. It wasn't, like, taken for granted as normal even then. It was banned in some places (1A wasn't what it is today on that). Wilson screening it in the White House was a statement, and such an unpopular one he had to halfheartedly walk it back.

“assessing” maybe. and the models themselves do not assess words like “thinking” or “understanding” to be semantically appropriate to describe what they do
100
maximally entangled sarah @sarahnemy.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
i use the word “computing” to describe what the models do. to me that’s the semantically appropriate way to describe it
100
maximally entangled sarah @sarahnemy.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
you wouldn’t. and if they aren’t self-aware and experiencing, i wouldn’t use the word “thinking” for them either. i’m making a semantic point—most of us assume “understanding” and “thinking” are words for self aware entities w experiences—not a factual one about which entities do these things
110
maximally entangled sarah @sarahnemy.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
idk why he’s insisting we should call what an LLM does “thinking” but not, say, a computer or a calculator or Siri or whatever

the text strings generated look more familiar but they are not more similar because the models aren’t self aware and don’t experience anything

the basket should get easier to obtain as we get more efficient at producing the things inside. inflation prevents us from ever enjoying the full benefit of that effect. the numbers look okay on the charts but should look much better and we’re getting decimated by housing, education and healthcare

maximally entangled sarah @sarahnemy.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
there’s a better way. you put the loaf of bread in a conceptual basket of goods and services that reflect the basic necessities of life and track changes people’s ability to purchase the things in the basket. i think this is what they do, but this is not my area at all

maximally entangled sarah @sarahnemy.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
vast numbers of animals think. fungi might do some degree of thinking. maybe plants. but the models aren’t self aware and aren’t experiencing anything. idk why, semantically, you prefer “thinking” to “computing”
290
maximally entangled sarah @sarahnemy.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
i think most of us agree, semantically, the word “understanding” connotes an experience that requires self awareness the models compute in ways that look like reasoning but that doesn’t mean they are experiencing anything

Imagine making this argument while spending your time on social media instead of spinning wool or mending something, like you'd have been doing prior to labor saving devices
No technological advancement produced less labor, because, despite the marketing, they were never intended to. They were meant to increase productivity for Capital; no produce leisure for workers.

i hate gratuitous depictions of violence in film and television. 99.9% of the time, there’s no reason to show it. it can easily be implied (currently fast forwarding past a scene of river cartwright getting worked over by the dogs on an episode of Slow Horses. because it’s nauseating to watch)
