Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing an essay, writing a eulogy, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing for 5,000 years.

(Apparently autocorrect preferred "fears" over "frats.")
010
Sarah Avery @sarahavery.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
For one thing, frats that control a building on campus get policed by campus security, which does nothing when frat boys commit crimes. If they want their own houses, they should have to be under jurisdiction of town cops, funded by locals who are less beholden to frat alumni.
010
Sarah Avery @sarahavery.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The frat boys have their freedom of association, and the colleges have the right to deny an organization campus resources if the organization owns or durably rents an off-campus space. And fears should never have control of a building on campus.

Sarah Avery @sarahavery.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Make them choose between that private property and permission to do anything on campus. You can be a private organization that owns a house, but then you can’t have any student activities funding, reserve any campus meeting space, participate in college-wide events, etc.

It's time to take the houses out of fraternities. The price of their continuing to be allowed to exist should be that they give up their real estate. Depriving them of dedicated space in which to haze and assault where only insiders are witnesses wouldn't fix everything, but it would help.

Cornell was on my kid's longlist. It's not on his shortlist. The university president deliberately backed his car up into a student. Then the university capitulated to the current administration in a stunning display of spinelessness. Now this.

Like, they’ve gotta know parents read these things, too, right? If I picture my kid at Kent State, there’s a very specific historical photograph I’m mentally editing him into, and my immediate gut response is that there’s no way in hell I’d send him there.

Kent State sent my kid this admissions brochure. Anytime I read the words Kent State, I can picture it, indelibly. I bet you can, too, and that we’re forming the same mental image. This university needs to sue its marketing consultant. #BadDesign #CollegeAdmissions #FamousPhotographs

One thing I’m sure he hasn’t forgotten is that the governor of Virginia sent his state’s National Guard troops across the DC line to protect Congress, and made sure nobody told the Pentagon until it was too late to stop them. Trump wants to be ready to fire on anyone Governor Spanberger might send.

the thing is, MAHA is like. one end of the spectrum. the other end of the spectrum is NOT, however, the current medical system. that's the middle of that bell curve, that. the actual other end of the spectrum is 'the medical system without medical misogyny and racism' and it currently doesn't exist.

What are the members of Rugosa Coven reading? Ria's reading treatises on alchemy from the court of Rudolf II, in Latin, because her new divination client is...complicated. Jane's rereading Middlemarch *again* for comfort. Bob's reading a self-help book about anger management, because it's time. 1/2

Punctuation is important, especially in obituary headlines. I initially misread MSN's headline for Wendell Berry's obit. My brain gave it the following punctuation: "Wendell Berry dies at 92. Cause of death: wife, children, famous quotes, poems and more"

Farewell to the great Wendell Berry. Remember — though you have done nothing shameful, they will want you to be ashamed.
DO NOT BE ASHAMED
You will be walking some night in the comfortable dark of your yard and suddenly a great light will shine round about you, and behind you will be a wall you never saw before.
It will be clear to you suddenly that you were about to escape, and that you are guilty: you misread the complex instructions, you are not a member, you lost your card or never had one. And you will know that they have been there all along, their eyes on your letters and books, their hands in your pockets, their ears wired to your bed.
Though you have done nothing shameful, they will want you to be ashamed.
They will want you to kneel and weep and say you should have been like them.
And once you say you are ashamed, reading the page they hold out to you, then such light as you have made in your history will leave you.
They will no longer need to pursue you.
You will pursue them, begging forgiveness, and they will not forgive you.
There is no power against them.
It is only candor that is aloof from them, only an inward clarity, unashamed, that they cannot reach. Be ready.
When their light has picked you out and their questions are asked, say to them:
"I am not ashamed." A sure horizon will come around you. The heron will rise in his evening flight from the hilltop.
