The Shot has the right to "self-defence"
The Shot has the right to “self-defence”

In Crikey, Sami Shah stated that The Shot is anti-Semitic, describing our masthead as “an attempt at a satirical site for people who found Facebook comments insufficiently moderated” and our work as “Practically demonstrations of antisemitism". Embarrassingly, in the same week, The Australian more accurately described us as “left-wing” and “probing the limits of law and language”.

Sami singled out two article headlines, The royal commission into the hurt feelings of genocidal psychopaths and Updates from the royal commission into the selective outrage of Zionists, which he clearly didn’t read before accusing us of sloppy “media criticism”. The headlines were mine, the body copy written by Joel Jenkins. They were no-bullshit, reality based tear downs of the fascistic assaults on our democracy, which all of us can see so plainly with our own eyes. Even liberal Zionist cowards like Shah.

During a mass slaughter that our government is supporting materially and diplomatically, it's not good enough to have segments of the indie media community trying to un-stretch the Overton Window back inside the borders set by decades of hasbara, horrifically biased and supremacist mass media, and the whims of the genocidal psychopaths. We don’t know how many Australians love milquetoast fence-sitting during atrocity, but Pew research shows that 80% of us despise Israeli atrocity and fascistic overreach into our democracies.

Description continued on next slide As a credo, I try to treat people with the same level of respect I am shown. We have done more serious analysis and investigative reporting on this depravity than Crikey has, a much larger outlet with more staff and resources. Over the years, The Sunday Shot has also platformed many Crikey writers. Needless to say, that moment has passed us by.

To make such petty remarks at some of the few unvarnished truth-tellers in Australian journalism on this subject, in this moment of abject moral failure, of cowardice and of complicity, speaks to the hollow pettiness of Shah’s analysis. Focus on what really matters, please.

There is enough genocide apologia in the corporate press already. It's pathetic to see it in the indie space, too. Do better, Crikey, your readers expect more.

Fuck fascism. Free Palestine.

In Albo's new antisemitism bill, the definition of "hate crime", which underpins the new regime to proscribe "hate groups" like the Nazis, specifically excludes "advocating genocide". That is, advocating genocide is treated as not being a racist hate crime. Now, why would that be?

🔴 Gaza Health Ministry Director-General: At least 24 people in Gaza have died from extreme cold and collapsing shelters, including three deaths yesterday and a child, bringing the number of children killed by exposure to seven (it has since risen to 8).

The humanitarian crisis is worsening fast. While trucks carrying soda and snacks are allowed in, Israel continues to block medicines, vitamins, and medical supplies amid a severe flu outbreak and new virus variants, some identified as mutated COVID. Hospitals are overwhelmed with entire families. Drug stocks are running out. Malnutrition is spreading among mothers and children, driving dangerous levels of anemia, premature births, and congenital deformities.

Doctors report children arriving blue from cold, shaking, or already dead. Many succumb to fever and severe coughs after months of hunger, fear, and exposure. It is a slow, deliberate crisis of starvation and preventable death.

At least 24 martyrs so far due to frost and cold and the collapse of homes, including 3 yesterday and a child, raising the number of child martyrs to 7. The humanitarian tragedy in Gaza is deepening, and its children do not need speeches but shelter and a hand to protect them. The occupation continues its policy of slow killing, while trucks loaded with cola and chips enter, medicine and vitamins are banned at the peak of a severe influenza outbreak and unprecedented variants, some of which have been proven to be mutated corona. Hospitals are teeming with entire families, medical stocks are depleting, and malnutrition is gnawing at mothers and children, reaching dangerous levels of anemia, with rising premature births and congenital deformities, in a deliberate starvation policy and a comprehensive health disaster. Victims of the cold, especially children, arrive with cyanosis and shivering, and sometimes having lost their lives, as death sneaks in the form of severe fever and coughing in bodies exhausted by hunger and fear over two years.

4/ Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah’s statement on her cancellation from Adelaide Writers Week:
‘This is a blatant and shameless act of anti-Palestinian racism and censorship and a despicable attempt to associate me with the Bondi massacre. What makes this so egregiously racist is that the Adelaide Writers Festival Board has stripped me of my humanity and agency, reducing me to an object onto which others can project their racist fears and smears.

‘The Board’s reasoning suggests that my mere presence is “culturally insensitive”; that I, a Palestinian who had nothing to do with the Bondi atrocity, am somehow a trigger for those in mourning and that I should therefore be persona non grata in cultural circles because my very presence as a Palestinian is threatening and “unsafe”.

cont'd -->‘After two years of Israel’s live-streamed genocide of Palestinians, Australian arts and cultural institutions continue to reveal their utter contempt and inhumanity towards Palestinians. The only Palestinians they will tolerate are silent and invisible ones.

‘I remain confident that the writing community and the broader public will ultimately respond with principle and integrity, as they did when I was singled out in the same racist way during the Bendigo Writers Festival. In the end, the Adelaide Writers Festival will be left with panellists who demonise a Palestinian out of one side of their mouths while waxing lyrical about freedom of speech from the other.’
