The important thing is this bill does NOT ban social media for certain ages and removes most of the harmful “parental consent” provisions. But there are still changes to be made to truly hold Big Tech accountable while respecting our rights. @evangreer.bsky.social dives in: bsky.app/profile/evan...

We are swiftly headed for a society in which a trans kid must undergo state mandated torture, are banned from being on line, are banned from hanging out in most public spaces, are banned from using bathrooms at school, banned from accessing the health care they need, and banned from playing sports.

Most other sites set the threshold at 13; I'm surprised it's so high for Gander. Please see if that's something you might want to reconsider!

Sara Elsayeda @saraelsa.net · 08/05/2026
I would suggest you look into lowering this threshold. Young Canadians deserve to be part of the conversation—and if Gander aims to be a safer, better version of social media, isn't it preferable to have them on Gander and not on other platforms instead?

I've just gotten an invite to Gander and learned that it is marked 18+ in the App Store, has a popup asking you to confirm you're 18+ in the app, and has a clause in the community guidelines requiring users to be 18.

The advantage of this approach is that it doesn't result in any practical changes insofar as the legislative process is concerned. The monarch will then no longer be needed to sign bills into law.
100
Sara Elsayeda @saraelsa.net · 29/04/2026
This can therefore be taken advantage of to amend the constitution such that laws are legally considered effective immediately upon passing third reading without the need for royal assent. Once the constitution is amended in this way, judges will apply this new principle.
100
Sara Elsayeda @saraelsa.net · 29/04/2026
While nominally true, the argument here is that royal assent as it stands is something the Governor General on behalf of the monarch is expected to do without question in accordance with convention. Any derogation from this convention is likely to result in a constitutional crisis.

To do so on the basis of a so-called "legal opinion" finding "liability risks" *in a foreign country* is not only a level of cowardice demonstrating abject unfitness for a position of this nature, but also a cause for review into the legal qualifications of whoever issued that opinion

Most age/ID verification policies have no safeguards to protect platforms that aim to be non-toxic or to provide a safe environment to children, and the same Big Tech companies pushing for these policies will push hard to make sure safer platforms are stifled so they can retain their monopoly.

(This is not to say that all parents are abusive. This *is* to say that the so-called "parental rights" movement specifically seeks to empower abusive parents. Non-abusive parents simply do not need to exercise the level of authoritarian control over other people's lives that this movement enables.)
1121
Sara Elsayeda @saraelsa.net · 26/03/2026
Make no mistake: it is a necessary part of the broader "parental rights" movement, which seeks to disenfranchise children and empower abusive parents, to exercise full control over the information children receive so that they can be indoctrinated into their ideology.
1134
Sara Elsayeda @saraelsa.net · 26/03/2026
This desire for control over every minute aspect of children's lives arises from the exact same motivations behind book bans in school libraries or mandatory parental opt-in for sex ed or mandating the usage of incorrect names/pronouns for trans kids without parental consent.

I am pro Iranian people. I stand with them against their own government’s repression AND against the imperial violence in the form of bombs dropped from the sky from Israel & the US who have already killed hundreds. I support neither imperialism or dictatorship. Sahar Delijani said it best:
I was born in an Iranian prison. My parents were held in their jails. My uncles lie in their mass graves.
Nothing you can tell me about the crimes of the Iranian regime that I haven't lived in blood and bone.
That doesn't mean I want my people bombed, maimed, killed, their homes in ruins.
If your vision of liberation comes only through the destruction of innocent lives, then it's not freedom you're after.

This is reminiscent of BBC's attitude towards trans-related issues, where anti-trans extremists are guaranteed a voice while advocates for trans rights are only occasionally cited. While this behavior may be common across the pond, it is completely out of character for the CBC.
