I'm happy to see Caryma Sa'd express her displeasure at the attacks I faced on the basis of my appearance in her comments section. I would call this kind of behavior out no matter the target because ultimately all it does is perpetuate systems of oppression and particularly misogyny.

"Contrary to this letter published by Toronto Today, I do not post videos of “progressive protesters” for “rabid online supporters” to “dissect.”

I cannot police what others say online, even though it would be preferable for people not to attack strangers based solely on appearance. I don’t like it when it happens to me, when it’s directed at conservatives, or when it’s directed at progressives."

Here's what this TPS officer is calling "not racist".
Ron Bouwmeister, an attendee of the Canada First rally, said he’s protesting for his grandkids.

“My kids, my grandkids are blonde. I was blonde. Now you look [at] all the schools, there's no blonde people anymore. That's wrong because we need a mixture.” he said. “I want my Canada back.”

Toronto Police Service officer (the one standing furthest to the right) claims Canada First protestors calling for stripping non-white Canadians of their citizenship and renditioning them to foreign countries are not racist while speaking to a curious bystander.

I got my hands on a leaked image of Jeffrey Goldberg in a group with top US officials.
This is the meme which has one clown among a couple of soldiers, but it has been edited so that there is only one soldier and everyone else is a clown.

Is this how the head of a supposedly 'allied' state supposed to speak about our country's affairs? We need to be united across the political aisle in standing up to him. Justin Trudeau should take a more hardline stance on him, and Pierre Poilievre should stop using him to diss on Justin Trudeau.
Donald Trump's post on Truth Social on 2024-12-16 at 22:35:

The Great State of Canada is stunned as the Finance Minister resigns, or was fired, from her position by Governor Justin Trudeau. Her behavior was totally toxic, and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada. She will not be missed!!!

I just sent my MP a letter expressing support for the postal employees striking for better working conditions, and I encourage everyone else to do the same. It's important for politicians to know that their constituents care about labor conditions and solidarity with the working class.
(truncated to fit character limits for alt text)

As a worker myself, I understand all too deeply the power dynamics at play between corporations and employees. Individual employees often struggle to have their voices and concerns heard by giant corporations and find themselves consistently drawing the shorter stick in negotiations with their employers.
Strong and effective unions shift that power balance and allow workers who would otherwise be disenfranchised a fair voice at the bargaining table.
But that doesn’t work when governments interfere with the bargaining process, such as by forcing the parties into binding arbitration. Not only does that deny workers their right to fairly negotiate, but it also sends a clear signal to other corporations: you don’t need to negotiate in good faith; if you drag the negotiations on long enough, the government will force your employees back to work.
I appreciate the Honorable Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon’s remarks on Wednesday assuring reporters that forced binding arbitration is not on the table. I encourage the Liberals to stand by this even if it gets more challenging to do so as the strike drags on.
This strike is undoubtedly causing a great deal of inconvenience and economic harm to Canadians across the country and in Toronto Center—indeed, I’m one of the people impacted by it. It’s tempting to blame this on the workers. That’s also the narrative most of our (American corporate owned) media wants to push. Let’s remember that Canada Post Corporation can bring an end to this strike at once simply by accepting the offer put forward by the union, or even just by coming to the bargaining table in good faith with a desire to resolve the matter.
I trust the Liberals will do the right thing and stand in solidarity with postal workers fighting for better conditions, and consequently, all workers throughout the country.

This statement from Liberal MPP Karen McCrimmon is a great example of how all bad-faith actors trying to stir up trouble should be treated. Instead of falling for their tactics and trying to engage as though they were raising genuine concerns, Karen called them out for what they were trying to do.
I understand that a recent announcement was made that a Kanata South location was being considered for the potential establishment of a welcoming centre for asylum seekers/refugees coming to Canada.

I spoke with Councillors Curry and Hubley and then with Mayor Sutcliffe. The councillors and I all stressed to the Mayor that more open information and consultation was needed, especially in the affected neighbourhoods. Everyone agreed.

Some clarifications are needed here.

1 LIE: A welcome centre will lead to an increase in local crime. This is NOT true. There has been no increase in crime in the vicinity of Ottawa’s other temporary sites for hosting newcomers. This LIE has been shared in order to make people afraid. There is no need to be afraid.

2 LIE: The site will be used for other unhoused populations. This is NOT true. The City has applied to the Federal Government for funding for a welcoming centre to receive newcomers and prepare them for the next stage in their Canadian experience. A welcoming centre will free up space in our homeless shelter system. It has been the only place for newcomers to go.

3 LIE: A sprung shelter is a tent. This is NOT true. A sprung shelter is a prefabricated quick assembly building. It is NOT a tent and people who suggest that this is a tent are wilfully trying to confuse and scare people.

4 A very comprehensive site search was conducted by City staff. Ottawa have surrendered their community and recreation centres to help newcomers. The City is trying to avoid that in the future.
Other neighbourhoods in Ottawa have surrendered their community and recreation centres to help newcomers. The City is trying to avoid that in the future.

5 The Kanata site is a secondary potential site. It is not funded and requires zoning by-law changes. This is a much longer-term process, with formalized opportunities for information-sharing and consultation.Teaching point:

I have been informed that many of the initial instigators of this negative campaign had few or non-existent ties to our community. They specifically, selectively, and heavily targeted members of ethnic diasporas with their disinformation to create anger and fear. These
tactics or behaviours are commonly referred to as 'Agitprop'. “Agitation propaganda” is, and was, widely used in the Soviet Union to control populations. Fear and anger manipulate behaviours and opinions. It has also been adopted as a modus operandi by right- wing extremists in many parts of the world, including Canada. There are definitely discussions that need to be had around this issue, but we need to be aware that our fears and anger can be used as weapons against us as a community. This prevents the development of real solutions to any
one of the very real challenges facing us today.

Why would someone intentionally:
• cause fear, anger, and conflict in our communities?
• provoke the dehumanization of one group of newcomers against another?

I don’t have an answer for you, but we all need to question. We must always ask WHY!

As with all misinformation campaigns, someone has their own agenda and objectives, and they don’t care who gets hurt.

Although this is strictly a City issue, I vigorously oppose any initiative that does not include the provision of comprehensive information and a robust consultation program.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out. Together we can make a difference!

Sincerely,

Karen McCrimmon
MPP for Kanata-Carleton
