In my local Waitrose they have several posters that look very AI. DESIGN A POSTER TO ADVERTISE OUR NEW DELI RANGE. Etcetera. I loathe those generic, faux drawn, nostalgic bullshit, friendly font signs but Waitrose. Damn. Do they have a design department? Or is the question did they?

"...through her work she had come to realize that this (sometimes) happened with people who had not gotten enough love from their mothers when they were young: They ended up wanting to please, to be good." Strout is wise and insightful with a truly distinct voice. 🩶

Just a reminder - we truly want to be a litmag anyone who wants to can sub to, but if the same names get in first every time that doesn’t work.

Not the sort of thing I read or write but this is so fucked up! (Also, why pay for a magazine - the story is created by AI so you can save your money and ask AI yourself?)

every time I say this, someone didn't know: you can get the NYRB, the New Yorker, the LRB, Paris Review, The Spectator (weirdly not New Statesman), The Week, both French & Italian Vogue & New Scientist among many many other magazines FREE via the Libby app from your local library?

It’s so illogical to me that there are grown adults with proper jobs who quite happily square their belief that charities and human rights experts and so on can be right about everything apart from trans rights and that fascists and dictators can be wrong about everything apart from trans rights

If you read the extract, it’s a good example of what some people (inc apparently these judges) think constitutes ‘good writing’ - clotted, imagistic, empurpled (rule of three!); multi-coloured throat-clearing, using obscurity as a mask for the lack of anything to say.

People should read whatever they like but I do think it’s a shame when someone doesn’t read novels at all. It’s like only watching documentaries and biopics.

Found a shop bought egg buried in a pot in my front garden. Joked it was a curse. Googled and it can be. Fascinating. (More likely to be a fox but for a moment it all felt very weird.)

“Farage is rarely pictured without a pint in his hand. But in his case it is presented as something that makes him ordinary, blokey, closer to voters. A sort of testament to his 'realness'. While, in Rayner's case, it is evidence that she is unreliable, dangerous, and - worst of all - unladylike.”
