These policies have been been awful and absolutely bizzare. Full disclosure - by end of 2026 I’ll have spent approx. 8000$AUD this year to stay in Aus. this is after the Aus taxpayer spent at least a quarter mil to fund my PhD! You wouldn’t think there would be much incentive to drive me out..

Last year, I publicly complained multiple times (see e.g. elevanth.org/blog/2025/07...) that the open access movement had been captured by publishers, and we are now worse off than before open access. Well people got mad at me for saying it. But I think things are still getting worse.

This is something else that’s really distressing. It’s *so* much less damaging if you’re writing with a flashy Western institution email address, you’ll still get the benefit of the doubt. Smaller unis and global south not so much

These dynamics echo in other areas (admin work, enterprise coding, social network content): LLMs make low/decreasing marginal utility output proportionally cheaper than high/increasing marginal utility output, hence the actor-optimal basket shifts badly. 1/ via @pwgtennant.bsky.social

Good policy from arxiv: AI-spawned misconduct - hallucinations, plagiarism, or evidence of using an AI to write “your” article - will get authors a one-year ban and the requirement that future submissions must be published at a reputable peer-reviewed place. Don’t waste people’s time with dreck.

We have recently clarified our penalties for this. If a submission contains incontrovertible evidence that the authors did not check the results of LLM generation, this means we can't trust anything in the paper. 3/
