Having been accused of being ‘virtually anonymous’ by a respondent accusing me of making Twitter arguments (🤷‍♂️): I’m a retired hospital pharmacist in Yorkshire. My wife was a GP so we think we have a little insight into health care. Probably a bit woke.

I, for one, am completely certain that this internal investigation was as thorough and comprehensive as all Reform processes are. The outcome was in absolutely no way completely 100% predictable.

I suspect you are absolutely right. An awful lot.

Quite. But of course that’s not cheating the system, is it? Just as speeding is absolutely fine - providing there are no cameras to see you doing it. 🤷‍♂️

I wonder who the high earning people, who will benefit from the childcare subsidy and believe they should because they are ‘taxed more than ever’ think will be paying for this gift. And how.

If you just substitute the words 'working age' for 'fighting age', suddenly the arrival of youngish men and women doesn't sound threatening. Rather, it sounds like exactly what we need for an ageing population.

I’ve said this before, but am happy to repeat it, I know people who will willingly admit that they avoid paying tax (esp VAT) by cash in hand deals, ‘negotiated’ invoice arrangements etc but I’m not sure I know anyone who is clearly in a category I could describe as a benefits cheat. Just me?

You have to be stupidly unaware to think this about yourself. You have to be a narcissistic moron to say it publicly.

Farage has described Burnham’s conference speech and comments on Brexit as the “biggest boost in my career”. Pretty much highlights everything anyone needs to know about this self serving ‘man of the people’ doesn’t it?

I know life is not easy for young people currently but in a world where they *expect* to go on holiday up to *seven times per year*, are things really as tough as we believe?

Do you find that either evidence or overwhelming? It looks to me like an article in which someone expresses an opinion. But, you know, I could be wrong.

Well, the people I’m talking about will actually now not be too far off their own retirement so it would be interesting to talk with them about whether they were quite as perspicacious as you suggest.

Paul Sandham @sandypuke.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I don’t suppose you could point me to some of this overwhelming evidence, could you?

I’m baffled. Why is it acceptable to believe that you are British Asian but wrong to believe you are English? Or even an English Asian? Is it because English people are so very much more important, gifted and pig headed than everyone else? So Suella would rather not associate herself with us?

I imagine she’ll argue that nobody is American unless they’re ’red’ and completely descended from Native Americans then? Maybe?

I think it’s sensible to keep contributions going even if the amount is less than you’d prefer. But the attitude of the young people I’m thinking of was simply that they didn’t imagine themselves or their circumstances 40 years into the future.

…. that life is not tough for young people today, just to suggest that their attitude to pensions may not be quite such a response to current difficulties as much as to a (rather disturbing, to someone of my age) laissez-faire attitude to the future.

I retired from the NHS (which has one of the best pension schemes available) 14 yr ago. I’d say even then that probably for around ten years or more new recruits were reluctant to pay into the scheme, preferring to ‘take the money now’. This is not to say….

4000 deaths? All Hamas units? Any evidence for that?

Paul Sandham @sandypuke.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
It was two weeks and multiple bombing raids by Israel. Arguably it was after two weeks of Israeli terrorism.

Paul Sandham @sandypuke.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
It’s a fair point. He turned 16 in 2000 so it seems unlikely his awareness would be awfully political much before that.

Paul Sandham @sandypuke.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
4000 Palestinians dead in the first three weeks of ‘shooting back’? But you are diverting from your original point. I repeat, those marching in support of Palestinians then or now are *not* supporting terrorism, quite the reverse, nor will they universally be supporters of Hamas.
100
Paul Sandham @sandypuke.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I think bombing started rather earlier than that didn’t it? War was declared on the 7th and the ground invasion started on 27th. Not all supporters of Palestine or opponents of the Israeli government are either Islamists or supporters of Hamas.

I’m afraid this episode does nothing to persuade me other than that US law remains rooted in the Wild West and all the brutal activities that were perpetrated back then.

That’s true. And it’s very bad. But the people who don’t bother to get past the headline and yet still vent their collective spleens are just as culpable in the misinformation blizzard.

Seems to me that the people shouting loudest about the right to free speech are always the ones who try to restrict others exercising this right. It’s as if they don’t really mean it. Isn’t it?

A year ago this week, Andy Burnham told a Labour Conference event that ‘PR is an idea whose time has come.’ Now, as Prime Minister, he has kickstarted the process to deliver it. A huge moment for everyone who believes in fair votes! Time is running out on First Past the Post.

Quite.

Paul Sandham @sandypuke.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Whatever the details behind the proposals, Burnham’s approach to politics is the right one. He’s not chasing votes, he has a plan and he’ll put it to the voters to back it or not. Recent decades have featured politicians following the popular vote not leading the country to better times. Good.

But what about the bits that are not ‘misspent’? For the roads, police, schools, NHS, fire services, street lighting, bin emptying? Do you begrudge that too? If so, how would you suggest you obtain these things privately?

True to form, we can always rely on Farage to undermine any State or criminal issue no matter how serious or complex they may be. Proving yet again that he is not a responsible politician but merely a chancer out to promote his own game.

I think Farage is definitely missing something. Several things in fact: honesty; decency; empathy; integrity and any true connection with the working man in the street. For starters.
