Amy Levy was an Anglo-Jewish poet and novelist born in Clapham, London. She was educated at Newnham College and frequented the London circles of Eleanor Marx and Olive Schreiner. In 1886 she met Vernon Lee in Florence, Italy and from then on they exchanged sapphic love poems to each other.
