Today we're out visting #Neolithic or #BronzeAge sites across Østfold! Here from the ongoing archaeological excavation at Hunn and rock art site Medgårdskogen, with painted figures rather unique to this region. Can you see them without the decorrelation? 📷: @yrjaskj.bsky.social

Got interviewed by @forskning.bsky.social about my favourite find from an excavation: this 6000-year-old piece of resin from Ime. A #StoneAge site with 🏹 and 🌰, situated in a sheltered spot. Possibly chewed and shaped in the mouth, it bore leaf imprints and smelled of pine during analysis. Link ⬇️
Screenshot from article, showing archaeologist wearing gloves holding a piece of resin. It’s broken in two due to analysis. The archaeologist holds one half between two fingers while the other rests in here palm. Exaction site in the early morning, with grass and grazing sheep in the background.

This is a powerful reminder that preconceived notions often shape "science" more than evidence does. For 200 years, we assumed a rich burial with tools belonged to a man - but DNA just proved it was a female metalworker. We need to challenge these biases! #Archaeology #BronzeAge

Living as a minority in a heteronormative world trains you to question given truths. That's a superpower, not a weakness. Queer gaze helps us see not just what's present in the archaeological data, but what's been erased or rationalized away. Archaeology needs more of it. 3/

In my article, I critique how Bronze Age rock art showing same-sex intercourse is almost always explained away — as initiation rites, pederasty, fertility cults. As Judith Butler might ask: why must it have a function? Why can't it just exist as a natural act? 2/

In connection with #pride, @uio.no made a small video based on my article on the value of ‘queer gaze’ (skeive blikk) in archaeology. Queer archaeology must be more than just making same-sex relations visible, we also need to dwell on explicit expressions without always explaining them away. 🧵 1/

Photo of an empty, muddy, old plastic bottle with a single handle. The bottle is lying on soil surrounded by stones of varying shapes and sizes. The side of the bottle with handle is uppermost. The mouth end of the container points towards bottom left of the picture.

There is text above the image of the plastic bottle which reads “Ancient skull found on archaeological dig is proof of our alien origins”. Having read the text, at first glance the plastic bottle looks similar to an alien skull. The body of the bottle looks like a long skull, the handle looks like a nose, and the indents with shadow either side of the handle look like eyes. An example of pareidolia!
