Hister (hister.org) is awesome. I've waited a long time to simply have a local, full-text, index of every web page I visit. (Getting the Safari extension is why I updated to macOS 15)

I have been very happy with macOS 14 but have been pushed into upgrading to macOS 15. Still taking a hard pass on macOS 26 and I’ll wait and see how 27 shakes out.

How is it Claude Code is built with almost infinite compute resources and the "best" AI known to man and still can't update itself properly?

Total unscientific nonsense spread via the media as a means of pretending they are doing some bastardized form of recursive self-improvement. Takes a lot to make me dislike a company more than OpenAI but Dario truly has taken the lead

Am I crazy or is paste in native macOS emacs just a horrible mess? It's routinely not pasting what I expect. I've been successfully editing text for 40+ years and never had this problem before. I'm also not convinced that undo works right either.

I think I understand what's going wrong with Emacs & text selection. It's this thrice damned "current line must be in visible viewport thing". I start to select & move the cursor to select the endpoint AND IT MOVES THE BEGINNNING OF THE SELECTION TO MATCH THE FIRST VISIBLE LINE ON SCREEN.

The one thing that is consistently pissing me off about my Emacs experience is that I can't get it to consistently copy text. Sometimes I drag, select and copy and it copies it all and sometimes it doesn't. I can't figure out the rhyme or reason of when it works and when it doesn't.

Learning #Odin feels weird for me. C was my first "high level" language around maybe 1986. 40 years later I have come back to a manually memory managed, closure-less, non-immutable, C-like language and it feels kind of fun 😜

And, as I said at the start, none of this addresses the very real harms that LLMs have already wrought, and will continue to do so. We cannot let vague concerns about AI safety escape from what this industry has done and will continue to do. www.wheresyoured.at/ai-is-alread...
There are, however, things we can do, per former FTC Chair Lina Khan, if we actually had any interest in doing so:

There is an extensive set of laws that govern dangerous and defective products. For example, releasing unvetted AI models or agents can violate consumer protection laws. Shipping flawed AI tools without implementing adequate measures to detect and stop rogue or defective AI agents can be an “unfair or deceptive” act or practice under the FTC Act (and analogous state laws). And some state AGs are already exploring holding AI firms and their CEOs criminally liable when their models participate in criminal activity.
If LLMs were a toy, they’d be taken off the shelves. If LLMs were a drug, they would be banned.

I agree that we need to take “AI safely” seriously, but that starts with treating LLMs as normal software run in a reckless and dangerous manner by malevolent entities with little regard for society.

I feel like people who consider themselves hardcore tech types and/or hard-nosed skeptics immune to cons like mysticism are much, much more vulnerable to being bowled over by the feeling of being spoken to by an entity outside themselves that somehow knows their thoughts.

These so-called "Frontier" AI companies, OpenAI, Anthropic, Grok (or SpaceX or whatever Elon calls his AI company these days) are all so sickening. They are an example of what desperate hype capitalism creates and they should all fail as an example to the future.

Having settled on Odin+Raylib+Clay my goal is to get a simple 1st bit of UI painted with them. This is going to have challenges as I have only a light dusting of the first two and one video watched about the third. Mind you, I like challenging. This feels like learning Elixir & OTP again.

Until forced to stop, Israel will continue to expand and destroy
Israeli army expands incursion in southern Syria

The Israeli army has expanded its incursion in the southern Syrian governorates of Rural Damascus, Quneitra and Deraa.

An Israeli forces patrol of four vehicles pushed into the al-Amal Farms in the northern Quneitra countryside, setting fires there before withdrawing from the area, our colleagues on the ground reported.

Israeli forces also fired seven artillery rounds at the edges of Beit Jin in the western Damascus countryside, before pushing into the town’s southern entrance.

The army set up a checkpoint nearby and searched several farmers.

Israel has escalated raids and artillery shelling across southern Syria despite US-brokered security talks between Damascus and Israel

I was hoping to get into the Jai beta but Odin+Raylib(+Clay I hope) feels like a powerful combination.

If you've never tried working while listening to Bach's Brandenburg concerto's I highly recommend it. Even in a relatively noisy environment they create a bubble in which I can think more easily and get into flow. It's a trick I've used for years and kind of assumed everyone knew about.

The vast majority of people who ‘debate’ immigration have no understanding of the phenomenon they’re ‘debating’. Just look at the people who voted for leaving the EU thinking it’ll mean better control over the UK’s borders and therefore fewer brown migrants and asylum seekers. They had no idea.

My first impression is that #odin is the C that if it had been around in the mid-'90s you wouldn't have been impressed with C++ and it's "classes". I'm still not sure about the 'batteries included' vs a package manager but I'm enjoying the ride so far.

With universal basic income, there would be no kids with student lunch debt, there would be far fewer people in prison, and if people in prison continued getting UBI, they'd also have more ability to donate money to help others.

Making sure that unpaid care work is supported is great, but limiting it to only married couples and reducing the support for single and unmarried working parents just isn't the right way to go about it. The right way to do it is universal basic income.

After a quick rename from ExLLVM to Wyvern, my #Elixir based #LLVM IR builder API is now released: hex.pm/packages/wyv... I suspect there are not many people writing Elixir and wanting to emit LLVM IR, but if you do there is a library for it now.

Turns out there are a huge number of fiddly bits in the LLVM spec around calling conventions, function params, and so on. It's not hard, just fiddly and means a bit more work and some refactorings. I still hope to have a usable ExLLVM v1 this week.

One of the benefits of #emacs is that you can usually just drill right into the source code of an editor function. It helps to know Lisp (I know Clojure which is close enough for me to get a high-level read of the code) but often it's well enough commented to get useful understanding anyway.

One of the things I missed when I started using #emacs was the VSCode project view. Now I happily use the space for another editor pane and live in C-x C-b and appreciate that I can C-s to find the buffer I want if it’s not at the top of the list. Cmd+P works better than C-x p f but not much.

I have no idea what the difference is that this time but I'm actually loving #emacs and the more so the more I get into it. Pretty crazy when you think I don't have any kind of completion, I'm having to type everything out myself. And I'm still learning it. I feel like this time it will stick.

Jobs as a fair income distribution system broke 50 years ago and will only continue getting worse because of the amount of income that flows to wealth and the way wealth buys politicians. We need to tax wealth, distribute Universal Basic Income as a national dividend, and get money out of politics.
