Mutual Aid hate is prevalent cuz rape culture is. Therefore so is victim blaming. It's all in defense of the same structures.

i was assaulted in 2016 and can tell you with *certainty* that i'm not over it just because it was a decade ago. i can't speak for anyone but me but i can say that when you hop online and say "we should approach with nuance this complicated situation that happened a long time ago," survivors notice.

TL;DR: Restorative justice probably doesn't mean what you think it does; no one is entitled to forgiveness; and forgiveness probably also doesn't mean what you think it does.
I am usually a fan of the idea of restorative justice, but recently, after seeing this concept only getting invoked by the worst people on the planet, perhaps just feeding everyone to the guillotine wouldn't be that bad after all.

For starters, I think that almost all people get the concept wrong, the "restorative" in "restorative justice" is not mean to refer to the the perpetrator in the sense that it is about restoring their name, reputation, social standing, wealth, etc.

The "restorative" part actually means that it is up to the perpetrator to give their utmost to make amends and undo the damage he did to whatever degree is possible to them.

Naturally, this is not always possible; an American or "Israeli" soldier cannot unkill the people he has murdered, which is why I personally am of the belief that forgiveness is impossible for veterans.

However, even if you do your best to make amends, you are in no way ever entitled to forgiveness, especially not if you commit a crime as horrifying as rape. But even by the off chance that you made amends, did everything for the sake of your former victim, and are indeed forgiven, forgiveness does not mean that everything will return to the old status quo, and frankly, if you don't get why that is, then you will probably never be deserving of forgiveness at all.

I'm not trying to be a dick here, but the "but HOW can we justify NOT GIVING GRACE to ANOTHER HUMAN BEING, knowing AS WE DO that MAN IS FALLIBLE" framing somehow only gets used with people whose bad acts you approve of, not, like people you actually find reprehensible or even mildly annoying

something something neoliberalism has commodified everything, even radical thought, to the point where radical thought is packaged up and resold to the masses in a hyperreal form. it doesn't matter what the actual ideologies or proposals are, all that matters is the aesthetic of the ideal.

also related, many people have internalized the belief that socialism means people don't have to work hard or sacrifice their own desires for the benefit of others on occasion. it's much the opposite! socialism is about abolishing exploitation and the production of goods for profit, rather than need

we do have to actually abolish rape (among many other harms) in order to abolish prisons. one of the biggest issues with prisons is the systemization of rape and proliferation of rape culture in the first place!

If someone has a drinking problem, you don’t put them in a bar. If a teacher abuses someone, even if he sincerely rehabilitates, you still do not leave him in charge of children. If someone uses their power to rape someone, you do not hand them power and influence once more.

they are not serious about rehabilitation because none of them have any idea what theyre talking about. restorative justice is about alternatives to prison, not consuming media from cancelled faves or whether or not sex criminals are fit for public media careers

Does it suck to lose your career and your social standing and your wellbeing out of nowhere because of something you can't control, in a way that might feel unfair or even violent, completely blindsides you and you can't do anything but submit to the consequences and endure it? Well then.

Ok well let's consider what happens to survivors of sexual assault, particularly ones who speak up about it. Often, they lose their career and lose friends and lose opportunities in life. To say nothing of physical and mental health consequences.
