It IS splendid. I've helped! Basil syrup. I don't think I can get enough basil on this holiday! I'm not keen on whisky else I'd be volcanoing with the best of them! Our hotel is Hotel Bristol, hence the name.

Had to be calmed down by M and do a brain reboot. Most moved by the faces of the past. People peering at us from 2000 years ago, but so close you could feel them breathing. Incredible experience emotionally, if not professionally. #UnconfinedWalks #Naples #Vesuvius #Pompeii #Herculaneum

Visited the National Archaeological Museum in Naples today (more apocalyptic weather). Successfully navigated train and tube, walked miles. Had a meltdown due to thematic approach to displays, mixing Pompeii and Herculaneum and loads of items with no provenance. 1/2

#UnconfinedWalks today was supposed to be a gentle amble into Sorrento to get our train tickets for our various jaunts. Instead we did a replay of yesterday's torrential soaking! Thunder, lightning, the works. Vesuvius no longer visible from the hotel!

#UnconfinedWalks consisted of yomping up endless flights of steps in beautiful Positano until the heavens opened and the gods unleashed thunderbolts and torrential rain! Dramatic, scary (M was off wildlife spotting in the hinterland and had to hide with a lizard in a crevasse) and funny in the end!

Climbed Vesuvius. Hot, steep and slithery underfoot as you walk across gritty ash and clinker. We saw steam/smoke gushing from the caldera and you could smell the sulphur. Unforgettable. 3 course lunch in a vineyard on the slopes. 5 wines, 43% proof apricot liqueur! #UnconfinedWalks #DrunkWaddling

I like the front because you can't see the angle of ascent and I don't feel as if I'm in a completely implausible tube. Can also ignore other passengers because their casual insouciance about the whole thing adds to the cognitive load.

Thank you. I know you know! Once again the anticipation was worse than the actual doing. Sitting as near to the front as possible has made a huge difference. Rescue Remedy prompts an immediate flurry of tears but makes my body sag as the tension is released. Weird but welcome.

That's it! I want to stand in the Forum in Pompeii and say 'Caroline est in foro'! I'm trying to persuade M to be Cerberus so that I can do the 'ululavit' bit but he's not looking keen!

Today's #UnconfinedWalks has been nearly 50 years in the making. I started Latin at school in 1977 and knew immediately I wanted to visit Pompeii. I've been scared of flying but improving. Good flight yesterday, Sorrento today. Vesuvius from hotel window. Magic!

Brief but lovely #UnconfinedWalks in warm sunshine and equinox light. Managed to persuade this beautiful Southern Hawker to hang about for a couple of pictures too.

No idea what this is is. It's sky blue and alcoholic and I'm swigging it like pop. The start to life in the Prem has been grim. Tonight we scored, we won and we put in an inspirational performance! I'm shattered. #ConfinedCocktaiks #PUSB #SBA. Picture 2 is last season but pretty much me rn!

‘Honest Bob’ Jenrick says he wants to “abolish” Natural England, and at the very least stop funding it, in the first 100 days of a putative Reform government. Reform may appear to be on the rocks currently but their plans are terrifying, mad & must be stopped. www.theguardian.com/politics/liv...
Jenrick: “Even if you can’t abolish, I don’t know, Natural England within the first 100 days, you can stop funding it, you can turn the tap off and the tap will be turned off a lot of these quangos, and that will drive savings.”

#UnconfinedWalks around the 1 hour 'Middlemarch' loop. Despite a few short showers this week, the land is still bleached. There are lots of fallen branches, and the leaf fall is crisp, dry and tired.

Rewilded land remains green amid drought-stricken English countryside, images show
National Trust’s Holnicote estate says restored wetlands and rivers offer proof of resilience to drought, wildfires and flooding Aerial footage of an estate in Somerset has revealed the benefits of rewilding land in the face of extreme weather brought about by the climate crisis. The area of the National Trust’s Holnicote estate where rivers have been returned to their natural courses and wetlands have been restored have remained green and lush during the five heatwaves across the summer. In contrast, the surrounding countryside has become parched and brown. Continue reading...
