Janet's at 41% approval rating. Not totally sure the decision is on her. Troy's folks might have said no thanks.

But the real news for me is the support for universal childcare. Boy, howdy! Maybe it's the question wording, but I'm assuming people aren't just straight up not realizing someone has to pay for it...
81% of Mainers support universal childcare

It's just wild to be in a race where some PAC funded by Leonard Leo can spend more than my entire budget on a single ad on Meta, using AI, and getting virtually everything wrong.

This one buy, by the way, is larger than my entire budget as a Clean Elections candidate in Maine.

Hey-hey! I was served my first attack ad against myself last night! Paid for by Laurel Libby! I love that Medium Buying, the Ohio-based company she paid $100k to on 9/30, decided to use the wrong aspect ratio for Instagram. Very savvy!

Obviously, this is all within margin of error and doesn't show any REAL movement, but this is the sort of late poll Gideon didn't get, where it at least looked like people were off the fence and done with this race. This shifts my personal evaluation of the race to a solid coin flip.

Also, I always find it strange when a newspaper tells me what I should be surprised by. Who's surprised by variations in attitudes by geography and age? Wouldn't it be more surprising if everyone thought the same shit?

Not sure I can remember a trigger warning in the Sunday Telegram before? Is there an in-house or AP style guide for which types of tragedies are particularly upsetting and require editor's notes?

Man, the Press Herald is on its last legs. Can't even cut and paste into the CMS competently anymore:
Weird line breaks mean someone cut from a pdf directly into the content management system and didn't even bother to fix the line breaks.

New UNH survey has a result I find genuinely surprising. Don't think media can influence opinion? Well, somehow, essentially every Republican in the state believes that "election fraud" is a problem, while essentially zero Democrats have that opinion.
Data shows Republicans basically all believe election fraud is a problem, while democrats don't think it's a problem at all.

The whole project is a shocking admission of an editorial staff completely out of touch with its readership and the state in general. And what passed for an initial cut of the data was ... sad. Hey guys, 19 is roughly half of 38! How's that for insight?

Were I editor of the Press Herald, and felt compelled to hire an out-of-state firm to interview 800+ of my potential readers, I would not admit in my front-page Sunday column that my paper's staff had discovered the housing crisis, lack of affordable childcare, and rising costs for young people.
We will devote more resources to the housing crisis, examine the lack of affordable childcare and go deeper on how rising costs are hurting our residents. Beyond capturing the current moment, we want to offer ideas on what can be done to help solve our state's biggest problems.

Did I write and record a campaign song? Why yes I did. Happy Labor Day! The unofficial start of Maine campaign season. (Also, you should support and join your local and relevant union. I'm very proud to be endorsed by the AFL-CIO, the MEA, and SEIU Local 1989!)

But, if you use AI mode, you don't even get the same answer two times in a row! Is the answer "wrong" either time? No, I mostly agree with the summary. But the primary source is ALWAYS BETTER THAN A SUMMARY, and the summary isn't even consistent! People are using this to make decisions! It's bad!

This shit is genuinely scary. It's a complete and total epistemic crisis. I have my google set to "web mode," which is the old way of searching, and is completely reliable. If you ask "what does Sam Pfeifle think about healthcare," you get this, which is great. Takes you right to my site! (Cont.)

This was a fun little ice-breaker at the Blueberry Festival in Gray, today (which rocked). Obviously, it's hardly scientific data, but sometimes the data matches perception in a way that's meaningful.

Maybe the 71st study will show how effective the cameras are.
Are Body-Worn Cameras Effective?
According to the 2018 BJS report, the main reasons (about 80% each) that local police and sheriffs’ offices had acquired body-worn cameras were to improve officer safety, increase evidence quality, reduce civilian complaints, and reduce agency liability.

Research does not necessarily support the effectiveness of body-worn cameras in achieving those desired outcomes. A comprehensive review of 70 studies of body-worn cameras use found that the larger body of research on body-worn cameras showed no consistent or no statistically significant effects.[3] This meta-analysis was rated by CrimeSolutions and resulted in a No Effects rating for the impact of body-worn cameras on use of force, assaults on officers, officer-initiated calls for service, arrests, traffic stops and tickets, and field interviews (i.e., stop and frisk). See Practice Profile: Body-Worn Cameras’ Effects on Police Officer Behavior. This profile is based on a meta-analysis published in 2020.

Great pot luck event talking local politics in New Gloucester tonight. NG Dems organized and were kind enough to invite me (I brought zucchini bread, which crushed). Vibes are off the charts.

This is not hyperbole.
Anti-Social Media is literally destroying society. People are more divided than ever, and social media is the root cause. There are ways to have conversations about serious issues with people that don't involve rubbing their face in excrement, but unfortunately that runs counter to social media's business model. There's a whole range of people who shouldn't be platformed, from bad actors to uninformed rubes to uncurious cheerleaders, and the algorithm makes damn sure you only hear from the worst of the worst - specifically tuned to you, personally, and if that means lying to you, the algorithm will do it. Algorithms do not care if they are amplifying misinformation, they only care that you never log off so they can harvest your data and sell you things you don't need. And they will absolutely amplify your posts to individuals most likely to hate what you posted and who will respond with vile screed.

If you get an email from this person, no you didn't. It's apparently an AI agent the Sea Dogs use. It confused me to the point I thought I was being scammed, and then I called and they pretended she was a real person for a little while, before admitting that it wasn't. This shit sucks.
