It's easy to think something is being over-diagnosed when you don't/refuse to understand it.

The “.exe” thing is ubiquitous for the platform that is GNU/Linux. Mint would offer a more approachable experience, especially Cinnamon. To my knowledge, most distros are getting more capable of reading NTFS, so it’s just a case of opening your file explorer, scrolling down, and mounting the drive

I get where you’re trying to come from, but stuff like this isn’t exactly quantum mechanics. It’s simply a websearch along the lines of “How to install {BROWSER} on {DISTRO}”

Sudo pacman -Syu | dnf | apt | [insert package manager here] firefox There, done. Also, distros ship with flatpak installers these days, things like Discover, or Bazaar for distros with KDE.

Give Ubuntu a go, or Fedora, or Mint. If you want to try without much risk, check out a VM platform like OracleVM and then try the above until you find one you like and feel comfortable looking up on. The problem with recommending distros is everyone has their go-to. It may not be for you.

Most of your .exe's would need to be run using WINE, there are tools to make this easier (like Lutris, which can handle most of the configuration even for non-games). Not all programs will work even with a WINE configuration. So do keep that in mind depending on the program.

Ahhh, I'm getting a picture now. I assume you were plugging your previously set up in Windows drives and not seeing them in Ubuntu? You might have last tried when most Linux distros couldn't read NTFS drives (cuz proprietary among other reasons). Recently there's a better time reading them.

2 years on, and I find myself actively missing any QOL behaviours of KDE whenever I have to work with Windows.

I went to Linux BECAUSE I was working in tech support. Doing an ICT Technician's apprenticeship gave me the confidence to do a hard switch 2 years ago. Most of the teething problems I encountered were just trying to stick to expected Windows behaviours.

Have thought back and recalled that most Windows program installers allow you to dictate a path beyond C:\, I'll have to rummage if the same is true with Linux, but it also does depend on what programs and why, as this is not normally a done behaviour in my experience.

My experience with this recently, that's pretty easy. What distros did you try this with? For example, I'm on CachyOS, using KDE, and I can handle removable media, a NAS file system, and multiple physical drives. Would you mind sharing what roadblocks you've faced?

Like, most I use the terminal is installing specific software as a CHOICE. (There are plenty of flatpaks but sometimes you just want the package version instead). Or if I want to try a different Desktop Environment out of curiosity.

Absolutely agreed! The distros I encourage my friends to all use KDE, or something similar. (Mint, Bazzite, Fedora)

From how I’m understanding your comment, what you’re advocating for remains “Trust random scripts, they’ll fix it, trust.” Forgetting how powerful a scripting language PowerShell is for the Windows environment. (Azure technician here.)

I keep trying to reassure my friends it’s not as difficult as it first seems. Most of the “difficulty” tends to manifest from expected Windows behaviours more than anything else (in my experience).

If you’re comfortable with it. I’d be curious as to how. While the layout is different, (i.e. /home/user/ vs C:\) there’s still Desktop and Documents areas.

Big on this. Don’t blindly utilise scripts from anywhere, even GitHub, if you don’t know what they’re doing.

I haven’t done it recently, but I got Genshin to work fine using Lutris. A check of protonDB will let you know if custom Proton versions are needed, which can be grabbed with flatpaks like protonup-qt or ProtonPlus. (Flatpaks don’t need the Terminal to install, as applications like Discover/Bazaar)

(Context: when discussing the ‘work’ of the journalist, they bring up a mother who insists she “knows her son”, insinuating that her (assuming considering the clinic in question) adult child doesn’t know themselves well enough.)

One line in particular caught my eye, on top of everything else in the article “I know my son.” God people really cannot stop infantilising autistic people, can they?

Thereby paving the way for the Far Right's "Easy Solutions" to sway voters. It practically hands the likes of Reform an easy win because the "Progressives" didn't change the average Britton's existence.

Very pessimistic. Whatever wins he does make will be forever overshadowed by his party's actions upon minority groups, and inaction against blatant monopolies and news organisations.

If we BARELY struggled with a summer like this, constructing those datacenters would be tantamount to ecological suicide! And for little gain at that, the past 4 years has proven to me not one single AI company is worth trusting.

Another great example is Y2K, depending on who you ask, it was either "no problem at all" (general consensus) or it was "A ton of work to absolutely make sure it was not a problem."

Even then, it’s pretty is achievable with ONE hyprland tutorial. I came across a thread going over the distro and man. It really offers nothing you can’t do better yourself with a couple video tutorials.

Out of genuine curiosity, what desktop environments would you recommend? I love KDE, and have used it without issue on low resource platforms, but I even after 2 years daily driving Linux, I know there's plenty more I can learn.

And the counter I'm making is that it didn't apply to this particular comment. The comment your quote was originally replying to, sure. But I really don't think it applies to "doesn't know what [the] Luddites actually thought."

Sam-G @sammy-g.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
You'd have a point if this comment was debating the word, they're clearly referencing the original movement here? Even then, is there not an argument that efforts have been taken to force that meaning of the term to muddy what the Luddites were actually fighting for?

Haha, at that rate you should probably consider investing in a NAS. Well worth it for backing up lots of data safely. But ye! Thought I’d add more, sometimes a well researched and presented video doc can be a lot more digestible for folks… even if they’re multiple hours (Hbomberguy’s)

Having worked for Tesco, you’re rarely trained to manage JUST tills, and self service tills need heavy babysitting. Their impacts on employees are minimal at best. This is true for all stores, but especially so for Express stores. Though that has its own issues with chronic understaffing pre covid.
